Peru resident killed -- Melvin L. Burris, 26, Peru, was pronounced dead on arrival at Rochelle Community Hospital late Thursday afternoon, following a four-car accident south of Rochelle. The Vega station wagon in which he was riding was driven by Dario P. Benvennuti, also of Peru.

Peruvian killed in accident

Melvin Burris, 26, of 420 E. Ninth St., Peru, was killed in a four-vehicle pileup on U.S. 51 seven miles south of Rochelle about 4:20 p.m. Thursday.

Burris, pronounced dead at Rochelle Community hospital, was a passenger in an auto driven by Dario Benvenuti, 22, of 809 Sixth St., Peru. The Benvenuti car was struck head on by another car and then hit from the rear by a third auto, state police at Sterling reported.

Benvenuti was reported in critical condition today in St. Anthony's hospital Trauma Center, Rockford, where he was taken after treatment at Rochelle Community hospital.

Terry Kolthoff, 26, of Rockford whose auto collided head on with the Benvenuti car, was reported in serious condition today in St. Anthony's hospital in Rockford. Joy A. Covel, 20, of ______ whose car hit the Benvenuti vehicle in the rear after the head on crash, is reported in good condition today in the Rochelle Community hospital. The driver of a tractor-trailer truck, also involved in the crash, Edgar Truner, 59, of Rockford, was not injured.
