Her childhood days were spent in Walnut and vicinity. She was united in marriage in 1863 to Oliver H. P. Hastings, who preceded her in death in 1895. To this union thirteen children were born, Irene, Elkanah, Mary, Henry and Charles preceding their mother in death. The surviving children are Mrs. Laurie Fisher of Drexel, Mo.; Perry of Joliet; Mrs. Ethel Frye of Rock Falls; Mrs. Edith Bridgman of Woosung; Luella of Sterling; Mrs. Bernice Magee of Sterlilng; Mrs. Mae Handy of Grand Island, Fla., and Robert of Sterling.

Mrs. Hastings was of a kind and loving disposition with a smile and cheerful word for all who passed her way, always ready to help one in need as well as rejoice in another's good fortune, envious of none, loving her neighbors and her enemies. In her passing a real soldier of the cross is lost, but heaven has opened her gates and received another angel.
