Kerton Cemetery
A cemetery called Kerton was
located along Kerton Creek, near State Route 100, on the west side. John Kerton
and his wife were buried in this family cemetery. Kerton Township was named for
this pioneer who came here in 1835. John is listed in the 1840 census as J.
Curten, between the age of 50-60 years. His wife is also listed as being between
50-60 years. It is presumed that he died sometime after 1840. There
is a reference to Mrs. John Kerton in the 1879 History of Fulton County: "Deacon
Abraham F. Brown, now of Schuyler county, was the first to preach in this
township, being called upon to preach the funeral sermon of Mrs. John Kerton."
The cemetery no longer exists...that we know of.
Any contributions, corrections, or suggestions
would be deeply appreciated!
