From the Astoria Fair Play, 25th ult.

The oldest person now living in Astoria Township is Mrs. Parry, mother of E. J. Parry. She is past 93 years of age and has lived in this vicinity 49 years. She is as helpless as a babe.

Uncle Stephen Merrill celebrated the 87th anniversary of his birthday yesterday.

Edgar Bredwell, of Maryville, MO., arrived here Tuesday evening, on a visit to parents and relatives. Mrs. B. and child, who have been here for several weeks, will return home with him.

Dr. S. B. Bennett and daughter, of Fairview, were in Canton yesterday.

Sam. A. Edmiston and wife, of Moberly, MO., arrived in Canton Wednesday evening of last week, on a visit to M. Landauer, Mrs. E’s father.

Benjamin Kettering, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is visiting Charles Hurst, in this city.

Hon. S. P. Marshall, of Ipava, was in Canton Monday night and Tuesday.

Ed. Mc Dowell and wife and Henry Hasson and wife, of Lewistown, came to Canton Tuesday and went to the Lock, where they spent the day, returning in time to take the evening train home.

Miss Laura Meek is visiting in the vicinity of Springfield.

Mrs. Donatt Miller is visiting her mother in Peoria this week.

The legislature having adjourned, Hon. W. J. Orendorff returned home on Saturday.

Rev. H. K. Painter, pastor of the Congregational Church, went to Oberlin, Ohio, his old home, to spend his vacation. He will probably be absent until about the 1st of August. During his absence there will not be any Sunday services in his church except Sunday school.

Miss E. A. M. Sparks, a teacher in the Lewistown schools, is visiting in Canton this week.

A. M. Swan and son Lloyd left Canton Tuesday evening for Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lloyd is in failing health for lung trouble and Mr. Swan takes him south by the advice of a physician hoping to improve his health.

Thomp. Tipton, dealer in live stock, Chicago Stock Yards, was in Canton on Tuesday. He is a son of the late John Tipton, a former citizen of Fairview Township.

Col. Taylor, of Peoria, canal commissioner, came to Canton Tuesday morning. He was met at the depot by two or three friends and taken to Copperas Creek Lock, to look after matters there.

The Ledger stated two or three weeks since that Mrs. A. Van Doren had gone to Danville, to be treated for cancer. Mr. Van Doren was notified his wife was worse, and left on Monday for Danville.

Mrs. Job Walker and child, of Atlantic, are visiting Mrs. Walker’s parents, Esq. Jacob Cosler and wife, in Joshua.

Mr. Edw. West, of Kansas, brother of Rev. E. West, of this city, visited his brother in Canton two or three days last week.

Mrs. John M. Wilson went to Danville last week, to be treated for cancer in the Breast. She was accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Arthur Ray. Letters received from her state she is getting along all right.

The Lewistown News says Dr. Don Waggoner has gone to Chicago, where he will probably remain for some months.

Cuba, June 30, 1885

Uncle Daniel Baughman, of New Philadelphia, was here over Sunday, attending the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Lasswell.

H. H. Clingenpeel, of Canton, was in Cuba Monday, looking happy and contented.

Mr. Fletcher, of Canton, Kansas, in company with Hon. J. A. Gray, of Lewistown, spent Friday night in Cuba.

P. W. Gallagher and family spent Sunday in Peoria.

P. W. Gallagher is having his residence, on west Main Street, nicely painted. W. C. Pusey is doing the work.

D. G. Havermale and wife, of Canton, spent last Thursday with Cuba friends.

Miss Mollie Hendrixon, of Liverpool, spent Saturday and Sunday with relatives and her many Cuba friends.

Dr. A. Hull, of Lewistown, spent Monday in Cuba, looking after his coal interests.

Charley Higgins, Ed. Landis and David Hilton, of Smithfield, spent Monday evening in town.

Miss Mary Haynes, of Mapleton, who has been spending the last two weeks with friends in town and vicinity, left for her home Wednesday.

Miss Ella Jackson, of Canton, spent Sunday with Cuba friends.

Rev. Kidd and daughter, of Larceland, Ill., Sundayed with Cuba friends.

Wm. Lasswell, of Peoria, was in Cuba the latter part of the week, called by the sickness and death of his mother.

J. M. Laws and J. C. Murray spent Tuesday in Peoria on business.

Uncle Abe Murphy, by some means unknown to him, lost his watch Sunday last. The finder will be suitably rewarded.

From the Farmington Bugle, 26th ult. July 2, 1885

Miss Lottie Randall, who has been visiting at Wahpeton, D. T., for several months, returned last Saturday.

We omitted to mention last week the departure of George Merchant, who left for Burlington, Iowa, where he will make his home.

Miss Emma Zeiser, of Madison, Ind., arrived in town last Friday morning, and will pass the summer with her sister, Mrs. Jos. Joerger.

Mrs. Geo. Stetson and Mrs. Hattie E. Stetson, nee Marah, arrived in town from Sioux City, Iowa, Saturday evening last, on an extended visit.

Wm. Widener arrived home from his Iowa farm, near Lima Springs, last Friday morning. Early in July the lease of the present tenant expires, and Mr. Widener will then remove with his family to his Iowa Farm.

Attorney J. W. Kriger has completed the corporation census, and it is found that there are within the corporate limits to the town of Farmington: Males over 21---367; Females over 21---420; Males under 21---230; Females under 21---241; Total population of 1258. The census of 1880 was 1,111, which gives the town an increase of 147 in the past five years.

Lewistown, June 30, 1885

Mr. Rube Simms, of this city, had a hand so badly mangled by coming in contact with the saws at Seiver's planing mill, on Monday, that one finger had to be amputated. Dr. Geigley performed the operation.

London Mills, June 29, 1885

Mr. Daniel Alms and wife were in McDonough County last week.

Mrs. Cline and son Lewis were visiting near Bushnell last week.

Miss Lizzie Fouts is visiting friends near Babylon this week.

B. Gilbert, of London Mills, is skimming cream in this vicinity for the Lewistown creamery.

Miss Alice Quinn is visiting in Peoria this week.

Mrs. Reihm, who has been sick for some time, is able to be out again.

From the Vermont Chronicle, 26th ult.

J. L. Abernathy left Table Grove, on Wednesday last, for Richards, Dakota. It is his intention to remain there until fall.

Joseph Beans, Jr., has purchased 40 acres adjoining his place, of Wm. Hoopes, paying therefor $1,600.

Last week Joe Ball was fined for drunkenness and in default of payment, was placed in the calaboose. Saturday night some one furnished him with an ax, and he chopped his way to liberty. Since that time he has not been seen, and it is reported that he has gone to Missouri.
