Conductor Kent of the Wabash railroad, who created a sensation on the Peoria division a year or so ago by kicking J. Rector off the train at Smithfield, and who has since been on the main line running from Chicago to Decatur, has resigned by request, so The Peoria Transcript is informed.
A man named Shadley was badly cut on the back of one of his hands on Monday, at the plow works. A hammer flew out of a helper’s hands and went out through a window. Shadley put his hand through the window and his hand was cut by a broken pane.
A young man of Orion township was before Esq. Bass on Monday on a charge of bastardy brought by Margaret Witham of Breeds, who appeared with a four-months old child in her arms. The young man compromised the case by paying the girl $50 and settling the costs. He stoutly declares his innocence.
Mr. Sam Thorne, formerly of Orion, now one of the C., B. and Q. bridge gang, was in Canton last week.
M. L. White returned to Canton Monday from Jacksonville, apparently restored in health.
Mr. R. A. Maxwell left Canton Monday for Kansas and California. He goes to hunt a brother who has not been heard from for several years.
Dr. Nelles, who has been visiting his old home in Canada, returned to Canton Friday last.
T. W. Thornton went to Chicago Monday night, and C. W. Kent went to the same city Tuesday night.
Mr. Oliver Gardiner, a brother of Uncle Jo. Gardiner, who is visiting here from Providence, Rhode Island; J. B., J. R. and J. A. Gardiner, Charles Martin, J. G. Hornstine, and two or three others, went to the river Tuesday, on a hunt of several days.
Dr. Whiting and wife will go to Quincy on Saturday, where the Doctor will preach next Sunday.
Mr. L. G. Boyles departed this week for Iowa City, Iowa, and will be employed in Robison Bros. Store at that place. His family will remain here for a time.
N. S. Johnson and wife, of Prairie City and J. L. Griffith and wife of Bushnell, were here on Tuesday, to attend the funeral of Mrs. Heister, mother of Mrs. J. and Mrs. G.
Mr. George M. Snyder and wife will leave this afternoon for Iowa City, Iowa, to visit relatives.
Mr. J. R. Underwood, of Aurora, brother of Mr. R. B. Underwood, registered at the Churchill House yesterday.
Mrs. Harrington, of Brimfield, is visiting Miss Annie Hews.
Mr. Amos Babcock and wife, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, arrived in Canton yesterday evening, and are at the Churchill House.
Clarence Blackaby, son-in-law of Mr. Charles Stanley, of this city, and son of Hon. Inmon Blackaby, has sold his personal property on the farm in Hancock county to his older brother and returned to Fulton county. His eye, which our last week’s issue reported injured, is improving, and Dr. Johnson, of Peoria, declares the sight uninjured.
R. D. Curtis, the fresco artist, is in Canton again. He has contracted to fresco the German Reformed church at Fairview. (transcribed by Bonnie Dagen)
