Generation No. 1

1. CHARLES BELDEN SR.6 CHURCHILL (LEVI5, CHARLES (CAPTAIN) SR4, SAMUEL (ENSIGN) SR3, JOSEPH SR2 CHURCHELL, JOSIAH1) was born 27 Sep 1785 in Newington, Hartford Co., Connecticut, and died 17 Sep 1878 in Fulton Co., Illinois. He married ELIZABETH HUBBARD 04 Feb 1807 in Newington, Hartford Co., Connecticut. She was born 06 May 1787 in Burlington, Hartford Co., Connecticut, and died 20 Jul 1867 in Fulton Co., Illinois.

Notes for CHARLES BELDEN SR. CHURCHILL:
Taken from "The Churchill Family in America", compiled by Gardner Aspah Churchill, Nathaniel Wiley Churchill and Rev. George M. Bodge.

Charles Belden Churchill I, son of Levi and Ruth, was born in Newington, Connecticut on September 27, 1785. He remained in Newington with his half-sister Elizabeth Churchill Hubbard and her husband Leonard after his father, Levi, had moved to New York. (Elizabeth was the daughter of Levi and his first wife, Elizabeth Hurlbut). On February 4, 1807, Charles Belden Churchill married Leonard's sister Elizabeth Hubbard. She was born in Burlington, Connecticut on May 6, 1787. This probably accounts for the name of one of their sons, Leonard Hubbard Churchill. Shortly after his marriage in 1807, he and Elizabeth moved to Boonville, New York. Charles was listed in the 1814 Census as the owner of property. He is listed in the 1820 Federal Census for Oneida Co., New York and in the 1830 Federal Census for the same county; his brothers Carolus and Silas and Benjamin were also listed. All nine of the children born to this marriage were born in Boonville, Oneida Co., New York.

Details of the life of Charles and his wife were published in the Fulton County News for August 4, 1971. This was from an interview with his son, Leonard Hubbard, in about 1903, and micro-filmed, courtesy of the Fulton County Historical Society. According to the obituary of his son, Charles Belden I moved his family to Portage County, Ohio in 1836. He traveled as far as Buffalo on the Erie Canal, then on the "Old Chautauqua Highway" to the Southwestern corner of the state. This was the main route of travel for emigrants going into Northern Ohio. His brother Carolus had already moved from Boonville to East Trumbull to Ashtabula County, Ohio and his half brother Noble had moved to Oxford Township in Butler County, Ohio. Charles Belden stayed a short time in Portage County. In the fall of 1837 his son Charles Belden II joined them and the family started out with a team and wagon for Illinois. Besides the parents the party included the children: Charles Belden II, William Stewart, (Note: William Stewart is the Father of Jasper Noel), Leonard Hubbard, Chester Beckley, Martin Lafayette, and Elizabeth. (A sister Etta Marie had married a William Cleveland and remained in New York.) After several weeks of travel they arrived in Fulton County, Illinois and rented a farm in Putman Township. In 1842 Charles Belden II purchased a farm in Canton Township west of Canton and the family moved there. At one time the entire family was down with typhoid fever and as a result the daughter Elizabeth died. She was buried in the "Old Blackaby" Cemetery, southeast of Cuba. No gravestone or marker is found.

Charles Belden Churchill was a soldier in the War of 1812 as were his brothers Noble, Carolus, and Benjamin. Congress had passed an act setting aside bounty lands for the soldiers. When Charles first came to the area in 1837, almost 3 million acres had already been taken up. Charles did not make claim for "Bounty Land" in Illinois. At that time, land in the area was selling at $1.25 an acre.

After 1850, Charles Belden I and his wife Elizabeth lived with their son Charles Belden II. Elizabeth died July 20, 1867 at the age of 80 and Charles on September 17, 1878, his age was 93. Their obituaries were both found on microfilm of the Canton Newspapers in the Parlin-Ingersoll Library. A fire destroyed the records of the Greenwood Cemetery located in Canton, but recent research now shows that Charles Belden I and Elizabeth are buried on the same lot as their son Charles Belden II and his wife. There is a large Churchill stone with smaller markers for Charles Belden I and Elizabeth and Charles Belden II and Louisa.

Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM STEWART SR7 CHURCHILL (CHARLES BELDEN SR.6, LEVI5, CHARLES (CAPTAIN) SR4, SAMUEL (ENSIGN) SR3, JOSEPH SR2 CHURCHELL, JOSIAH1) was born 04 May 1818 in Boonville, Oneida Co., New York, and died 25 Feb 1895 in Lebanon, LaClede Co., Missouri. He married MALVINA (MAXON) Maxson 02 Jun 1839 in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois, daughter of RANDALL MAXSON and DEBORAH KENYON. She was born 15 Feb 1822 in Allegheny Co., New York, and died 10 Oct 1901 in Lebanon, LaClede Co., Missouri.

Notes for WILLIAM STEWART SR CHURCHILL:
From Betty Jo Ehn to Judy Churchill [Jasper is Judy’s great-grandfather]: William Stewart Churchill was born in Boonville, Oneida Co., New York on May 4, 1818. On June 2, 1839, William married Malvina Maxon. Malvina was born in Oneida Co., New York on May 1, 1822. On the 1850 Fulton Co., Illinois Census shows a Bradley Maxon age 21 living with William and Malvina, probably her brother. A family history printed in the Ash Rock Church book gives her name as Melvine Maxin, this is incorrect and the correct spelling of her name is verified by the spelling of her brother's last name on the 1850 census report.

I have also found a copy of a title to land that she purchased from her brother-in-law, Charles Belden Churchill II and his wife Louisa. I find this purchase most unusual for the times, because it is the only record that I find in a wife's name with no mention of the husband. However, the Atlas of Fulton Co., Illinois 1871 does show that William Stewart owned and farmed an 80 acre farm.

William Stewart Churchill and his brothers and sisters were all raised in Boonville, New York. Some of the information that we have gleaned is from an interview published in the Fulton County News on August 4, 1971. It is from a reprint of the interview with Leonard Hubbard Churchill in 1903 and his wife Louisa in 1905.

William Stewart Churchill was about 15 years of age when in 1833 he and his brother, Charles II went to Hartford, Connecticut to work. They worked in this area for about 2 years and then returned to their native village in New York. In the fall of 1837 the family, Charles Belden I and wife and children, went to Portage County, Ohio. They purchased a pair of three year-old colts, loaded all of their possessions into a wagon and the party of eight started for Fulton Co., Illinois. This same year on February 10, 1837, the town of Canton, Illinois was incorporated. The population of the town was about 700.

The family settles on a rented farm in Putman Township. William Stewart, like most men of his time, was trained early in the use of an axe, a scythe and a grain cradle. The Churchill family prospered and purchased property in the area. William Stewart and all of his brothers, Martin LaFayette, Levi Merril, Charles Belden II, Leonard Hubbard and Chester Beckley, farmed in an area of Fulton County roughly enclosed in a triangle with Canton, Cuba and Fiatt as the corners. William and Martin moved out, but the other four brothers farmed there until their retirement.

William and Malvina were married in 1839. By 1840 cook stoves appeared in the rural areas, but it was not until after 1850 that there was a stove that could drop ashes from the fire box into an ash pit (pan) below. It must have been such a luxury to have a stove like this.

Your Great Grandfather, Jasper Noel Churchill, was born September 16, 1843, the 2nd of fourteen children. His childhood must have been so exciting, as during those years of the 1850's many changes were taking place. The Canton Register newspaper was printed for the first time. The U. S. Mail started using postage stamps, until that time all letters delivered were paid for in cash. The first stamps were in 5 and ten cent denominations, and in 1851 one and three cent stamps were adopted. The sewing machine was introduced to industry in 1850, but most of the clothes were still made at home. I am sure that Malvina made the clothes for the family by sewing them by hand. Ready made clothes for men could not be purchased in stores until after the Civil War or for women until about 1880. Shoes were made by local shoemakers. Kerosene lamps were offered for sale in 1857. It was the biggest improvement in rural home lighting in 100 years. One of the developments of the late 1840' and early 1850' was the construction of plank roads. Three roads were built west and southwest from Chicago. The road was a toll road and was operated for about six years. The first railroad in Fulton County, The Northern Cross, crossed the northwestern corner of the county in 1855. The railroad was later taken over by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy (C. B. & Q.) Railroad.

The enterprising citizens of Fulton County had transformed it from a native wilderness into one of the most attractive portions of the State. Fine buildings, fine barns and comfortable dwellings with all the modern improvements; good lawns and gardens could be found in all parts of the country in the 1850's.

William and Malvina were still listed in the 1880 census for Fulton County. It is not known why, but probably because their son Edmond B. had moved to Missouri, that William and Malvina moved to Mansfield, Missouri.

Then in 1890 they moved to Lebanon, Missouri where William homesteaded. He died on February 25, 1895 and Malvina died on October 10, 1901. Both are buried in the White Oak Pond Cemetery south of Lebanon on State Highway 5.

Notes for CHARLES BELDEN JR. CHURCHILL:
Sources: "Churchill Family in America" by Gardner A. Churchill, Nathan Wiley Churchill, Rev. George M. Bodge, circa 1905. The History of Fulton County, Illinois, 1879, page 544.

Charles Belden Churchill JR was born in Boonville, New York. At the age of 15 he spent about three years in Niagara County, New York in the employ of his uncle, although he received no money for his work. He then returned to Boonville and two years later he and his younger brother, William Stewart went to Hartford, Connecticut to seek their fortunes.

Charles' next enterprise, in the year 1835, was to become a book agent in the State of Georgia. During the next two years he traveled the entire state of Georgia. It was not unusual that he moved to Georgia, since his brother Levi was in business in that State.

In 1837 Charles sent his father money to move his family to Illinois and it was in Ohio that they all met.

In 1842 Charles bought and planted a new farm and built a good house upon it in Canton Township, Illinois. He continued to take care of his parents as long as they lived and did much toward the care and training of the younger members of his family. His parents lived in the house for several years while he traveled.

In 1845 to 1850 Charles was employed by a Mr. Ford as a traveling salesman, engaged in trade and with a team carried dry-goods throughout the South and Canada. He was very successful in this business, but after five years he wanted to establish a home and settle down. On his way home from the South he went by the way of his former homes in Connecticut and New York.

On November 26, 1850, in Lewiston, Fulton Co., Illinois, Charles Belden JR married Louisa E. Hurlbut. She was born in Boonville, New York and was the daughter of John and Mary (Churchill) Hurlbut. She knew Charles Belden JR from the time she was an infant. The farm that her parents had in Boonville was near the property of Charles Belden SR.

In 1850 Charles Belden JR and Louisa returned to the farm in Canton and became prosperous and influential citizens of Canton.

In 1875 he built the Churchill House in Canton. It was considered one of the finest hotels in the State, and had the first telephone in the City of Canton.

At the time of his death, Charles owned over 500 acres of land and had helped his brothers and their wives acquire land. In their last years, his parents lived with him.
Charles Belden II and his wife Louisa are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

The following is taken from the "History of Fulton County, Illinois, 1879, Canton Township, page 544.

Charles B. Churchill, JR., a native of Oneida Co., N. Y. , came to this county in 1837, bringing with him his father, mother and 4 brothers and located on a farm in Putman Twp.

In 1842 bought a farm on sec. 32, Canton Twp., and partly broke the land and raised crops; there was no house on the place and he tented it while attending his crops.

In 1845 he went to South Carolina, Georgia and other Southern States, engaged in trade; was in Florida during the Florida war; returned from the South in 1850 and married that year Miss Louisa Hurlburt and moved on his farm. They have 3 daughters and one son.

The Churchill's are a very old family. Samuel Churchill lived in Westerfield, (Wethersfield), Hartford Co., over 200 years ago. A large brick house built at that time is still standing in good condition. Capt. Charles Churchill was a son of Samuel and a Captain in the Continental Army. Levi was a son of Charles and held a Captain's commission under Washington during the Revolution. Charles B. Churchill JR was a son of Charles SR who served in the War of 1812. The Churchill's are descendants in a direct line from an English duke by the name of John Churchill. Chas. B. SR died at his son's, C. B. JR., September 17, 1878, at the age of 93.

7. CHESTER BECKLEY7 CHURCHILL (CHARLES BELDEN SR.6, LEVI5, CHARLES (CAPTAIN) SR4, SAMUEL (ENSIGN) SR3, JOSEPH SR2 CHURCHELL, JOSIAH1) was born 14 Apr 1824 in Boonville, Oneida Co., New York, and died 12 Jan 1901 in Canton, Fulton Co., Illinois. He married CATHERINE PURKLE 02 Nov 1848 in Fulton Co., Illinois. She died Unknown.

Notes for CHESTER BECKLEY CHURCHILL:
Chester Beckley Churchill was born in Boonville, New York on April 14, 1824. Chester Beckley was named after Major John Chester and Lieutenant John Beckley who served in the Revolutionary War with his Great Grandfather Captain Charles Churchill.

In 1848 he married Catherine Purkle, a native of Caldwell Co., Kentucky. Chester was a very popular fiddler and played at dances throughout the county. He was an agriculturist and in 1871 he owned a 160 acre farm in Joshua Township, Section 27. (Plat Book of Fulton County Illinois, compiled and published by American Atlas Co. of Chicago in 1895.)

Much of the information about Chester's family is unclear, and is based on the U. S. Census reports.

In the 1850 census, the only child was Harriet, listed as one year old.

In the 1860 census the children and their ages were: Harriet 11, Mildon 9, Chester 7, Leonard 5, James 3, and George 2 months., a son named William was born after the 1860 census was taken.

In the 1870 census the only children listed were Stephen 4 years and Kate 10 months.

It is thought that his six boys all died of typhoid fever in 1862, probably within a five week period. There is a gravestone for George in Sugarville Cemetery, east of Fiatt and it is assumed that the other five boys are buried there also. The date of George's death according to the gravestone inscription, was September 29, 1862.

Chester and his wife Catherine lived the latter part of their lives with their daughter Kate (Mrs. Homer Randolph) on the Randolph farm northwest of Canton.

Chester Beckley died January 12, 1901 and Catherine on October 30, 1902. Both are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Canton.

The following taken from the "History of Fulton County, Illinois, 1879, Joshua Township, page 730.
Chester B. Churchill, agriculturist, sec. 27; P. O., Canton; was born in Oneida County, N. Y., April 14, 1824. His father, Chas. B. Churchill SR, of Connecticut, died April 17, 1878. Mrs. C. was born October 3, 1828. They have had a family of 9 children,--7 boys and 2 girls. He is a member of the Christian Church.

Portrait and Biographical Album of Fulton Co., Illinois, Chicago: Biographical Publishing Co., 1890

Chester B. CHURCHILL, Pages 228-229, transcribed in full by Judy Churchill
CHESTER B. CHURCHILL, a well-known farmer of Joshua Township, is classed among the pioneers of this county who have done good service in advancing its agricultural development. He is a native of the State of New York, and was born in 1824. He came to Fulton County in 1837, and cast in his lot with the pioneers whom he found working zealously to promote the growth of this section of the country. He entered at that time his present homestead on which he has resided for more than forty years. He has evolved a fine farm form the wild tract of land that he purchased from the Government, has it under excellent improvement, and provided with good buildings.

Prior to coming to this State, Mr. Churchill was married in 1847 to Miss Catherine M. Purkle, who has been a devoted helpmate and an active assistant in the pioneer labors of her husband. Nine children have been born to them, as follows: Harriett, Mildon, Chester, Leonard, Washington, George, William, Stephen and Kate. Of these the following are deceased: Mildon, Chester, Leonard, Washington, George and William. Stephen is a resident of Joshua Township; Kate married Homer Randolph, and lives in Canton Township. Mrs. Churchill is a zealous and active worker in the Christian Church, of which she is a devoted member.

In pioneer times Mr. Churchill was widely known as one of the best musicians in this part of the country. His services were in constant demand to play the violin for country dances, as the young people would rather have "old Church." as they called him, than any one else, and he would be called to go even as far as Peoria to furnish music for parties. His children have inherited his musical gifts and are well-trained musicians. Our subject cast his first ballot in this county, and has always voted the Democratic ticket. He has taken an active part in educational matters and has been Director of schools in his own township for over twenty years. At one time he was a prominent member of the Grange when that order was flourishing.

Jasper Noel Churchill was born in Cuba, Fulton Co., Illinois on September 16, 1843. Jasper was listed in the 1850 as age 7 and 1860 census age 16, living in Fulton County during those dates. The 1880 Census shows Jasper a grown man age 37 and married, living in Independence, Montgomery Co., Kansas. He was the father of Charlotte age 12, Charlie age 7, Alwina age 5, William age 1. His brother Edmond, age 24 was living with him at this time. In 1910 the census report shows that Jasper was living in the northeastern corner of Oregon in the town of Elgin, Union County, Oregon, age 65 years and had a 2nd wife, Permelia (Debo).

Jasper and Emma Stephens were married on January 6, 1867 in Fulton Co., Illinois. Emma was the daughter of Nicholas and Caroline [Hews] Stephens. They did not get married until after Jasper had served in the Union Army during the Civil War. After Emma died, Jasper married Permelia Debo Garner, widow of Vincent Garner. Jasper died on December 15, 1915 in Elgin and is buried at the Elgin Pioneer Cemetery, Elgin, Union County, Oregon.

Jasper and his brother Willis enlisted as Private's in the Union Army on February 7, 1865. Their residence was listed as Putnam. They served with the 151st Illinois Infantry, Co. B. They mustered out on January 24, 1866 in Columbus, Georgia. The Union Army, Vol. 3, states that the 151st Infantry was organized at Quincy, Illinois and was composed of companies from various parts of the State, under the commands of Col. French B. Woodall, Col. Herman W. Snow, and Major Silas Battey. They fought on February 8, 1865 at Bushness, Illinois. On March 1865, the company marched to Murfreesboro and proceeded by rail to Chattanooga, where it reported to Major General James B. Steedman who ordered the regiment to report to Colonel Sickles at Dalton, Georgia. The regiment arrived in Dalton, Georgia on March 23rd and was occupied in drilling, picket and guard duty and scouting until May, when it was ordered to Resaca, Georgia. After a few days in Resaca, Georgia they were ordered to Calhoun and then to Kingston, Georgia, where the regiment arrived on May 12, 1865. On July 28, 1865 the regiment was ordered to Columbus, Georgia where it arrived July 31, 1865 and was mustered out there on January 25, 1866. After that it was ordered to Springfield, Illinois where it received final pay and discharge February 8, 1866. According to the Civil War Pension Index No. 1179, Jasper M. Churchill filed for and received a pension. His widow, Permelia, received his pension after his death.

OBITUARY: Elgin Newspaper, December 1915.
G. A. R. VETERAN DROPS DEAD IN THIS CITY
J. M. Churchill Found Dead Yesterday Noon by His Son

J. M. Churchill, for several years a resident of Elgin and veteran of the Civil War, was found dead in his chicken house shortly after noon yesterday by his son Charley. All that forenoon deceased had been choreing around the home and was in his usual good health and spirits. Assisted by his son he moved back a load of hay during the forenoon. At 12:00 his son started for his home a few blocks away for his dinner, promising before his departure to return immediately and assist his father in sawing wood.

When the deceased did not appear in his own home for dinner his wife went into the barnyard to look for him. He was not to be seen, but she presumed he had called on some of the neighbors for a few minutes and returned to the house. At 1:00 o'clock the son returned and he went out to the barn thinking perhaps he might be choreing around. Still no trace found. Soon tracks were seen in the snow leading to the hen house and a visit there disclosed the old man's death. He had apparently gone there with a fork to clean the building and dropped dead while at work. Deceased had always been a man of jovial disposition and was vigorous for one of his age. The funeral services will be conducted in the First Baptist Church, Friday at 10:30 A. M., under the auspices of Nathan Baker Post, G. A. R.

Jasper M. Churchill was born in Illinois, September 16, 1843, died in Elgin, Oregon, December 15, 1915 and was therefore 72 years, 2 months and 29 days old at the time of his demise.

In February, 1865, deceased enlisted in Company B, 151st Illinois Infantry Volunteers and served until January 24, 1866, at which time he was mustered out.

Deceased was united in marriage to Miss Emma A. Stephens, January 6, 1867. To this union eight children were born six of whom survive. The Mother died January 19, 1890.

In 1890 deceased was married to Mrs. Garner, who with the six children remains to mourn his loss. The surviving children are: Charlotta, Emma, Almina, Martha M., Charley and William N.

Letter written by Elizabeth Churchill to her cousin Henry Churchill, RR 2, Box 37, Cuba, Illinois, to her cousin Henry Churchill (son of Jasper Noel Churchill) LaGrande, OR . (Note: Jasper Noel Churchill is the Great-grandfather of Judith Ann Churchill.)

March 20, 1932 Dear Cousin Henry:
I am the youngest daughter of your great Uncle Charles B. Churchill. He is a brother to your grandfather William Churchill. I am the only one living of my father’s family. I am 76 years old. I am just up from being sick with the flu. I am very nervous. I am writing a new Churchill Book. I am writing for your family record. All that is required is to write your name and date of your birth and place of birth and your wives maiden name and date of her birth and place of birth and your children’s names in full and date of their births and place of births.

I sent to Boston Mass. for the old Churchill Book it dates back to 1085. I read in the book till I come to Captain Charles Churchill of the Revolutionary War. He married Lyda Belden. When his son Levi got married he named his first son Charles Belden. He is my Grandfather and also your Fathers Grandfather. Your Father is my first cousin, Jasper Churchill. When he got married to Emma Stevens he went west. I never knew where he lived. I was a little girl then. I remember of my parents going to the infair and taking us children along. Jasper and Willis was both married the same day so it was a double infair. Cousin Edmon's daughter Bessie Arrington tells me Cousin Jasper's first wife died and he married again. Can you tell me her maiden name and date of her birth and place of birth and your Fathers children names and dates of births and place of births. I want to write it in my new book I am writing. Tell me the date of your Father's death. I never knew where Cousin Mary Hellen Hoar lived till her death notice came out in our Canton Paper. It gave her children names and addresses so I went to writing to them. I have all of their family records, but the oldest girl I have wrote to her and also her sister that lives in Osborne, Kan. I hope to hear from Armita Greig so I can have all the family records of Mary Helen Hoar family. I have been five years trying to get all of my near relation. I want to finish the book as soon as possible, so please give this your prompt attention for life is very uncertain.

I sent to Los Angeles California for a picture of the Coat of Arms of our branch of the Churchill family. It will be in every book I have made so please give me all the dates of births and deaths you can so I can write it in the book. I want to get it made and I hope I will live to read it. My husband died June 10th, 1926. My son’s daughter lives with me. I am so very deaf I can't live alone. I am the Mother of 6 children. My two youngest died in infancy. I married my third cousin. Our grandfathers were brothers. My son lives near me. He was all the boy I ever had. This is all for now. Hoping to hear from you soon. I remain your cousin and well wishes. Elizabeth Churchill my address is R. R. 2, box 37, Cuba, Illinois

Mary Helen Churchill, information provided by Betty Jo Ehn.
Mary Helen Churchill was the fourth child of William Stewart and Malvine Maxon Churchill. She was born in Cuba, Fulton Co., Illinois and married William Bramwell Hoar on December 24, 1865. She was one of 14 children. The Churchill family was living in Joshua Township, Cuba Village, Fulton County, Illinois at the time of her birth. Little is recorded of her early life. In the section about her father I have mentioned some of the changes that were taking place in that time period and what an interesting life Mary Helen and her brothers and sisters must have had. She probably went to a country school for a few years and was active in her church.

She married William Bramwell Hoar on December 24, 1865. She was not of age at the time of the marriage and her parents had to give written permission.

Mary Helen Churchill Hoar is buried at Ash Rock Cemetery, Ash Rock Township, Rooks Co., Kansas.

William Bramwell Hoar, Information provided by Betty Jo Ehn
William Bramwell Hoar was born on September 25, 1837. He was about 5' 8" tall, had a fair complexion and auburn hair and brown eyes. It was said that he resembled his Scottish mother, Margaret Irwin. He married Mary Helen Churchill, daughter of William Stewart and Malvina (Maxon) Churchill and they were the parents of 12 children. (Betty Jo has copies of this marriage and pictures in her file).

In Illinois, the Churchill's and the Hoar's all farmed in the area of Fulton County that is roughly enclosed in a triangle with Canton, Cuba and Fiatt as the corners. A large part of this area has been strip-mined for coal and many of the old roads, the creeks, many of the homesteads and most of the country schoolhouses are gone. A portion of the area is now a resort and recreational area known as Wee-M-Tuk Hills; with lakes, homes, a golf course and a club house. There are hills now where there used to be ravines and deep lakes where no lakes existed before.

In 1877, the family traveled by covered wagon from Illinois to Ash Rock Township in Rooks County, Kansas. There were several other wagons in the party. Part of the group that made this trip was Thomas, the Father of William Bramwell, his wife Anna and their daughter Rhoda, half sister to William. Other Hoar's making this trip were half brothers Tillman and his wife Hattie; and George and his wife, Elizabeth. William Bramwell and Mary Helen's first home was in a dugout, little more than cave in the side of a hill. As soon as possible they added a room made of sod, and later they built a two room "soddy". During the early years they were a part of the widespread phenomenon known as the sod-house frontier. But it was not long before William started farming and became very prosperous. In later years he built a home in Woodston and lived there until his death on December 28, 1911 at the age of 84. A lot of William's history is in the Woodston Town records and the newspapers. Twelve children were born to William Bramwell and Mary Helen, the first seven born in Cuba, Illinois.

It was the land that brought William Bramwell and Mary Helen Hoar to Ash Rock. They wanted the land as property and they wanted to farm the soil. It was the land that supported them. The big rush for land began in 1877 and reached a peak in 1878. By 1880 most quarter-sections in the township were claimed. The Homestead Act of 1862 permitted an actual settler who was a citizen of the United States to obtain up to 160 acres by paying a filing fee of $10.00, build a house and live on the land for at least 5 years. If all these conditions were met, then a patent was issued by the President of the United States. The Hoar families were some of the 35 that filed in 1877 and stayed to obtain title. In 1899 William Bramwell and Mary Helen purchased another quarter section of land. By the time the last two children were born they had built a frame house and in about 1903 they had added another room.

William was one of the founding Fathers of the Ash Rock Church. In 1883 the Ash Rock Stone Church was built using native stone (limestone) with a shingle roof. The church still stands and each Memorial Day services are held. Descendant Betty Jo Ehn attended a Memorial Service to honor those early pioneers. About 100 descendants came to pay their respects. It was a solemn experience to walk between the pews, stand at the altar and read the dedication plaque listing the names of William Bramwell and Mary Helen (Churchill) Hoar. Betty Jo's mother used to go to this church when she visited Grandpa William Bramwell and Grandma Mary Helen.

William Bramwell and Mary Helen retired to Woodston on March 1, 1906. Their daughter Louisa and her husband Cal Crawford moved on the homestead. In 1908 they sold the farm to another daughter and her husband, Cora and Everett LaRue and then in 1917 the property passed from the heirs of William Bramwell and was sold to F. Rector. In 1909 William Bramwell built a new home in Woodston and from the design of the house it was a very nice home. Betty Jo was able to locate this property and was quite shocked as to the condition; it was in shambles and being used for storage.

William Bramwell died at Woodston on December 28, 1911 at the age of 74, only a few years after he retired. Mary Helen Churchill Hoar died at the home of her daughter, Margaret, in Alton, Kansas on March 25, 1931 at the age of 84.

William Bramwell Hoar is buried in Ash Rock Cemetery, Rooks Co., Kansas, along side his wife Mary Helen Churchill Hoar. On March 4, 1882, William Bramwell and Mary Helen (Churchill) Hoar gave a quit claim deed to the cemetery association for two acres and the cemetery grounds were surveyed and staked. The cemetery and the rear of the Ash Rock Stone Church was next to his farm. Cemetery lots were sold and deeds issued for them. Only the head of the family could hold title to a lot and no family would be permitted more than one lot. The cost of a lot was set at $2.00. Ten lots were set aside for "a Potter's Field", and as of 1993 no one had been interred in to those ten lots.

MILITARY HISTORY
William Bramwell Hoar served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private in the 103rd Illinois Infantry Regiment, Company F on August 20, 1862. He mustered out on June 21, 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee. The 103rd Infantry lead by: Col. Willard A. Dicker; Lieut. Cols. George W. Wright, Asias Willison; Majs., George W. Wright, Asias Willison, Charles Wills. As the family story's are told from William's son Charles: William was in Sherman's March to the Sea. He marched in snow with worn out shoes and injured feet, leaving blood spots in the snow. One time he was grazed by a bullet across his scalp and was treated several times for intestinal fever and dysentery. Later in life he sang songs of the Civil War. William received a monthly pension of $12.00 and after his death, his wife Mary Helen received a widow's pension of $10.00. Following his discharge from the Army on June 21, 1865, William Bramwell returned to Fulton Co., Il. Six months later he married Mary Helen Churchill. The ceremony was by minister of the Gospel D. J.
Ross and was held at the home of Mary's parents, William Stewart and Melvina Churchill.

About August 6, 1862, Honorable A. C. Babcock, Captain G. W. Wright, Mr. Peterson and other influential men of the county concluded that it was possible to form an entire regiment from Fulton County. On September 6, 1862, nine companies arrived at Peoria, Illinois, went into camp and organized the 103rd regiment. It had been understood with Governor Yates that in case Fulton County could not furnish a sufficient number of men to form a regiment by October 1 he would send a company from some other county, but on September 27, it was found there were men enough to muster ten companies and on October 2 the regiment was mustered into the United States service. On October 24 it received orders to be ready to move at a moments warning and on the 30th orders came to move by the Illinois Central Railroad to Cairo, Illinois. At Cairo it took a boat for Columbus, Kentucky where it was again placed on rail cars and at night arrived at Bolivar, Tennessee, having made the trip from Peoria in 52 hours.

The first year's service of the regiment was devoted to marching, guard duty, etc., in northern Mississippi and Tennessee but in November 1863, it participated in the Battle of Missionary Ridge. Eight companies of the regiment were in the engagement, mustering 237 men and of this one commissioned officer and 19 enlisted men were killed on the field and 68 were wounded, 5 or 6 of whom died of their wounds.

The regiment began its part of the Atlanta campaign at Resaca, Georgia, where it lost 1 man killed and several wounded. At Dallas it had quite a lively skirmish but with no loss to the regiment, though in the battle of the following day it lost 2 killed and 35 wounded.

On June 15 it moved to the extreme left of the Army and by a rapid movement of the brigade captured some 470 of the enemy, the loss of the regiment being 4 killed and 8 wounded.

In the assault on Kennesaw Mountain, of 12 officers of the regiment who went into action, 3 were killed and 4 wounded and of the enlisted men 19 were killed, the number of wounded not being reported.

During the Battle of Atlanta on July 1864 the regiment captured about 300 prisoners and suffered a comparatively small loss, 4 men being killed. It started on the march to the sea with Sherman and in the Battle of Griswoldville lost 3 killed and 2 who later died of wounds.

During the campaign of the Carolinas it participated in all the skirmishes and battles in which the 1st division of the 15th corps was engaged.

After the surrender of Johnston it marched to Washington and participated in the grand review, then camped 3 or 4 miles north of the city until ordered to Louisville, Kentucky, where, on June 14, 1865, the order for muster out was received by telegraph, and on the 21st, the necessary rolls having been prepared, the regiment was mustered out, having been in the service 2 years, 8 months and 20 days.

The number originally mustered in was 808; recruits, 84; making a total enrollment of 892, which, with the addition of 33 field, staff and line officers made the aggregate of 925. But of the 84 recruits, 9 never joined the regiment, and the record of the 916 men was as follows:

Killed in battle and died of wounds, 89
Killed by accident, 2
Died in the field and at home, 130
Died in Andersonville Prison, 7
Discharged on account of wounds and disease, 134

Notes for LEVI HUBBARD CHURCHILL:
Levi Hubbard Churchill was born October 29, 1849. On the 1870 census it shows that he was still living at home. However, on June 18, 1872 a marriage license number 133 was issued in Fulton County, Illinois for Levi and Amanda Hoar. Amanda was the daughter of Thomas and Anna (Spry) Hoar. She was also the half sister of William Bramwell Hoar.

The 1880 census shows a 7 years old child, Amanda Churchill, living with her grandparents, William and Malvina Churchill. Amanda Hoar had obviously died because in 1883, Levi and his 2nd wife Rebecca Maddox and five daughters left Illinois and moved to Laclede Co., Missouri.

They moved to a small farm near the White Oak Pond Community. This is south of Lebanon on State Highway 5, with them was a niece of Rebecca's, Stella Anne Barba (who later married Silas Wesley Churchill, Levi's brother). Ina about 1890, Levi and his family returned to Illinois.

16. SILAS WESLEY8 CHURCHILL (WILLIAM STEWART SR7, CHARLES BELDEN SR.6, LEVI5, CHARLES (CAPTAIN) SR4, SAMUEL (ENSIGN) SR3, JOSEPH SR2 CHURCHELL, JOSIAH1) was born 16 Sep 1859 in Cuba, Fulton Co., Illinois, and died 06 Feb 1929 in Lebanon, LaClede Co., Missouri. He married STELLA ANN BARBA 30 Jul 1895 in Lebanon, LaClede Co., Missouri. She was born 1877 in Ohio, and died 1948 in Lebanon, LaClede Co., Missouri.

Notes for SILAS WESLEY CHURCHILL:
Provided by Betty Jo Ehn: According to an interview, fall of 1993, with Emma Churchill Jackson, daughter of Silas Wesley and Stella (Barba) Churchill:

"In 1890, William Stewart and Malvina (Maxon) Churchill and their son Silas Wesley moved to Lebanon, LaClede County, Missouri. Their son Levi and his family, including Levi's wife's niece Stella Anne Barba were also in this area. (Later Levi and his family returned to Illinois.) On July 30, 1895 Silas and Stella Anne were married.

A license No. 19 was issued, and Levi H. Churchill acting as guardian of Stella signed the consent form. At that time Silas Was 35 years old and Stella Anne was 17. Silas and Stella bought a homestead south of Brush Creek on the old Hartville Road in LaClede County, where they raised ten children. William Stewart and Malvina also lived on this property, "Churchill Hollar". A large spring, a few yards from the house furnished the water for the household. That spring is still used today.

There were many problems for the Silas Churchill family through the years. But the year 1907 was the most remembered as a very bad year. In March Stella gave birth to a son Rufus. In August the oldest son Willie became ill and died. Five days later Ruthene, the second oldest daughter, died of the same illness. A week later Silas was bitten by a mad dog and had to go to Madstone several miles from home to stay for a time. He was one of the fortunate ones, for he was cured of rabies. "The Madstone" was a type of Health Center, where people were treated for rabies.

The Churchill family were noted for honest up-right lives. The grandchildren of Silas and Stella, who raised their family in the "Churchill Hollar", are among the respected citizens of today in LaClede County.

Silas died at his home on February 6, 1929, and is buried beside his children Ruthene and William and his parents at the White Oak Pond Cemetery. We took pictures of this cemetery. The lot #47 was purchased by William Churchill at the time Willie and Ruthene died."

Notes for ELIZABETH CHURCHILL:
Letter written by Elizabeth Churchill, RR 2, Box 37, Cuba, Illinois, to her cousin Henry Churchill (son of Jasper Churchill) LaGrande, OR . Copy provided by Tonya Churchill Chandler.

He married Lydia Belden. When his son Levi got married he named his first son Charles Belden. He is my Grandfather and also your Fathers Grandfather. Your Father is my first cousin, Jasper Churchill. When he got married to Emma Stevens he went west. I never knew where he lived. I was a little girl then. I remember of my parents going to the infair (affair) and taking us children along. Jasper and Willis was both married the same day so it was a double infair (affair).
