FIRST GENERATION

 
1.  Grant M. POWELL1 (son of William Powell and Mary Jackson) was born in 1835 in Kentucky.2 He appeared on the census in 1850 in Shelby County, Missouri.3 He appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois.2 In 1880 he was living in Lee Township, Fulton County, Illinois.4 He died in 1898 and was buried in the Clarence Cemetery, Shelby County, Missouri.5,6 

 

 

He was married to Angeline HOUSER (probably a daughter of Thomas HOUSER (or HOWSER)) about 1856 in Kentucky. Angeline HOUSER1 was born in June 1839 in Kentucky.2,7 She appeared on the census in 1850 in Fabius Township, Knox County, Missouri.8 She appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois.2 The wife of Grant shows up next as Tena A. in the 1880 Illinois census (probably Angeline) in Lee Township.4 She appeared on the census in 1900 in Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.7 She died in 1906 in Missouri, and was buried in the Clarence cemetery.5,6 It seems that Angeline, wife of Grant Powell, was the same person as Angelina Houser who was living with the family of Dr. Franklin Powell in Knox County, Missouri in 1850. Tena A. Powell then appeared as mother-in-law in the family of Clifford and Susie B. Albright in the 1900 census, Clarence, Missouri.7 Also living with the Albright family was Inez G. Powell. Susie and Inez were daughters of Grant and Angeline Powell. Grant M. POWELL and Angeline HOUSER had the following children:

SECOND GENERATION

2.  Thomas W. POWELL1 was born in 1856 in Kentucky.9 He appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois.2 He was a carpenter in 1880 in Lee Township, Fulton County.4 He was a railroad worker in 1887 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.9 The 1900 census placed him in Galesburg,10 and the census of 1910 placed him in Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois. He died in 1913 and was buried in the Clarence cemetery, Shelby County, Missouri.6  The marriage license shows age as 32 at next birthday, born in Kentucky, Grant Powell (father) and Angeline Howser (mother).

He was married to Julia E. LOUK (daughter of Jefferson LOUK and Anna PIERSOL) on 2 Jun 1887 in McDonough County, Illinois.11,12 Julia E. LOUK1 was born on 1 Nov 1861 in Illinois.4 She appeared on the census in 1870 in Prairie City, McDonough County, Illinois.13 She appeared on the census in 1880 in Lee Township, Fulton County, Illinois.4 She died on 14 Nov 1888 in Illinois and was buried in the Virgil Cemetery.6  

 

 

The marriage license shows age as 26 at next birthday, Jefferson Louk (father) and Annie Piersol (mother). Thomas W. POWELL and Julia E. LOUK had the following children:

3.  Martha A. POWELL1 was born in Mar 1858 in Kentucky.2,14 She appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois,2  and in Lee Township in 1880.4 She appeared on the census in 1900 in Maquon, Knox County, Illinois.14

She was married to Albert Dewitt SCUDDER on 25 Dec 1874 in Fulton County, Illinois.11 Albert Dewitt SCUDDER1 was born in Jan 1855 in Illinois.14 He appeared on the census in 1880 in Lee Township, Fulton County, Illinois.4 He appeared as a carpenter on the 1900 census in Maquon, Knox County, Illinois.14 Martha A. POWELL and Albert Dewitt SCUDDER had the following children:

4.  George M. POWELL1 was born in 1860 in Nicholas County, Kentucky.12 He appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois,2 and in Lee Township in 1880.4 He was a farmer in 1886 in Lee Township.9 He appeared on the census in 1900 in Berwick, Warren County, Illinois,15 and on the 1910 census in Indian Point Township, Knox County, Illinois.16 He died before 1920. His marriage certificate shows age as 27, Grant Powell (father), Angeline Howser (mother), and birthplace as Nicholas County, Kentucky.

He was married to Eva MILLS (daughter of Abraham MILLS and Mahalia BLOUT) on 11 Mar 1886 in Fulton County, Illinois.12 Eva MILLS1 was born about 1864.12 She appeared on the census in 1900 in Berwick, Warren County, Illinois.15 She appeared on the census in 1910 in Indian Point Township, Knox County, Illinois.16 She appeared on the census in 1920 in Cedar, Knox County, Illinois. In 1920 Eva was living with George G. and Erma B. Howard (her daughter). George M. POWELL and Eva MILLS had the following children:

5.  John C. POWELL1 was born in Sep 1863 in Kentucky.2,14 He appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois.2 He appeared on the census in 1880 in Lee Township.4  He was a carpenter in 1900 in Maquon, Knox County, Illinois.14 He appeared on the census in 1910 in Fairview, Fulton County, Illinois.17 He appeared on the census in 1920 in Fairview Township, Fulton County, Illinois.18 He resided Middle Grove, Illinois in 1927. He died about 5 Feb 1930 in Middlegrove, Fulton County, Illinois.19 Obituary of J. C. Powell, Independent Courier - Clarence, MO, Wed., Feb. 6, 1930: “J. C. Powell, who formerly resided here, died at the home of his daughter, at Middlegrove, last Monday after a long siege of illness. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Powell who came from Kentucky to Missouri. At the time of his death he was 67 years of age. While a resident of Clarence he followed the carpenter trade with his father, and was married here, his wife being Nettie Saunders, also of Clarence. She preceded him in death by three years, but a large family of children survive their parents. He was a member of a large family but there are only five brothers and sisters surviving, namely, Charles Powell, of Kansas City; A. D. Powell, of Galesburg, Illinois; Mrs. Lizzie Patrick, of Paris; Mrs. Gertie Carter, of Kansas City; and Mrs. Merrill Albright of this city.”

He was married to Nettie SAUNDERS about 1890.18 Nettie SAUNDERS1 was born in Dec 1873 in Missouri.14 She appeared on the census in 1900 in Maquon, Knox County, Illinois.14 She appeared on the census in 1920 in Fairview, Fulton County.18 She died about 1927. John C. POWELL and Nettie SAUNDERS had the following children:

        23               iv.   Beulah POWELL1 was born about 1900 in Illinois.17 She appeared on the census in 1910 in Fairview, Fulton County, Illinois.

        24               v.   Ethel POWELL1 was born about 1903 in Illinois.18 She appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Fairview, Fulton County, Illinois.17,18

6.  Mary Elizabeth POWELL1 was born in May 1865 in Kentucky.2,20 She appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois.2 She appeared on the census in 1880 in Lee Township, Fulton County, Illinois.4 In 1900 she was in Jackson, Monroe County, Missouri.20 In 1910 she was in Washington Twp., Monroe County, Missouri.21 She appeared on the census in 1920 in Jackson Township, Monroe County, Missouri.22 She died after 1930. She was listed as Mary on the 1870 census and as Elizabeth on the 1880 census.

She was married to John W. PATRICK before 1891. John W. PATRICK1 was born in Dec 1863 in Missouri.20 He appeared on the census in 1900 in Jackson, Monroe County, Missouri.20 He appeared on the census in 1910 in Washington Twp., Monroe County, Missouri.21 He appeared on the census in 1920 in Jackson Township, Monroe County, Missouri.22 Mary Elizabeth POWELL and John W. PATRICK had the following children:

        27                i.   Charles A. PATRICK1 was born in Mar 1891 in Missouri. He appeared on the census in 1900 and 1910 in Monroe County, Missouri.20,21

        31               v.   John R. PATRICK1 was born about 1901 in Missouri. He appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Monroe County, Missouri.21,22

        32               vi.   Mabel C. PATRICK1 was born about 1902 in Missouri. She appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Monroe County, Missouri.21,22

        33              vii.   Catherine C. PATRICK1 was born in 1910 in Missouri. She appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Monroe County, Missouri.21,22

7.  Franklin D. "Doc" POWELL1 was born on 8 Apr 1868 in Illinois.2,23,7,6 He appeared on the census in 1870 in Union Township, Fulton County, Illinois. He appeared on the census in 1900, 1910 and 1920 in Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.7,24 He died on 26 Jan 1927 in Clarence.23,6 He was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri. Obituary of Frank Powell, Feb. 2, 1927: The death of Frank Powell occurred Wednesday night about ten o'clock at the hospital following the amputation of his leg below the knee several days previous. On Jan. 1, Mr. Powell accidentally shot himself while hunting, the bullet entering just below the groin and ranging downward. On account of the place of lodgment the bullet was not removed. The operation was necessary on account of the poor circulation in the lower part of the leg and foot. Members of the family and friends thought his condition was improving but on Wednesday night the bursting of the large and weakened artery caused his sudden death. Frank Powell was well known in Clarence and the large crowd attending his funeral was an evidence of his many friends. He was kind hearted with a cheerful disposition and always brought pleasure and joy to those about him. During his affliction he underwent great pain and suffering, but with fortitude and at different times he admonished his children in realization of his going and the inevitable. Frank Powell was born 8th April 1868 and departed this life January 26th, 1927, at age 58 years, 9 months and 18 days. His parents were Grant and Angeline Powell.

    He was married to Miss Nora Post March 28th, 1880 and to them were born eight children, three boys and five girls. Two of the children, a son and daughter, were taken in infancy. With the devoted and loving wife, four daughters and two sons survive: Mrs. Harold Jones of Erie, Pa., Mrs. W. K. Noel, of Ralston, Nebr., Mrs. Harry Bragg, of La Plata, and Mrs. Ida Powell, at home, Joe Powell of Bloomington, Ill., and Merrill Powell, a senior in the Clarence High School. He also leaves the following brothers and sisters; A. D. Powell, of Galesburg, Ill., Charles Powell, of Kansas City, John C. Powell, of Middle Grove, Ill., Mrs. J. W. Patrick, of Paris, Mo., Mrs. Gertie Carter, of Kansas City, and Mrs. C. Albright, of Clarence.

    The deceased had lived in Clarence many years and was well known to the people of Clarence. --- For several years he worked for the Missouri Power and light Co. Family lore claims that Doc once allowed Jesse James to spend the night in his barn, but for only one night, saying that he didn't want any trouble.

He was married to Nona Belle POST (daughter of William M. POST and Hattie F.) on 28 Mar 1889.23  Nona Belle POST1 was born in Apr 1872 in Illinois.7 She appeared on the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Monroe County, Missouri.25 She appeared on the census in 1900, 1920 and 1930 in Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.7,24,26 Nona was living with daughter Ida M. (Bert D. Janes family) in 1930. She died on 26 Nov 1936 in Kansas City, Missouri. She was buried on 28 Nov 1936 in Maplewood Cemetery, Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.5

8.  Susan B. (Lethabell?) POWELL1 was born on 24 Sep 1871 in Illinois.4,7 She appeared on the census in 1880 in Lee Township, Fulton County, Illinois.4 She appeared on the census in 1900 in Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.7 She died on 30 Mar 1954 and was buried in Clarence.

She was married to Merrill Clifford ALBRIGHT before 1900. Merrill Clifford ALBRIGHT1 was born on 18 Oct 1866 in Illinois.7 He appeared on the census in 1900 in Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.7 He died on 16 Jan 1952.

9.  Charles A. POWELL1 was born in Dec 1872 in Illinois.4,7 He appeared on the census in 1880 in Lee Township, Fulton County, Illinois.4 The 1900 census indicates that Charles was born in December, 1872 (age 27). He was a barber in 1900 in Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.  He appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Clarence.24 He resided Kansas City, Missouri in 1927. He appeared on the census in 1930 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. He died in 1946 and was buried in the Clarence cemetery.5, 6

He was married to Mary Ellen.7,6 Mary Ellen1 was born in Jul 1877 in Missouri.7 She appeared on the census in 1910 in Shelby County, Missouri. She appeared on the census in 1920 in Clay Township, Shelby County, Missouri. She appeared on the census in 1930 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. She died in 1957 and was buried in the Clarence cemetery, Shelby County, Missouri.5,6

10.  Asa D. POWELL1 was born about 1875 in Illinois.4 He appeared on the census in 1880 in Lee Township, Fulton County, Illinois.4 He appeared on the census in 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.10,27,28,29  He was a Railroad Check Clerk in 1920.

He was married to Signe C. before 1906. Signe C.1 was born about 1882 in Sweden.28 She appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.27,28  Asa D. POWELL and Signe C. had the following children:

        42                i.   Clarence E. POWELL1 was born about 1906 in Illinois. He appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.27,28

        43                ii.   Ruth A. POWELL1 was born about 1908 in Illinois.  She appeared on the census in 1910 and 1920 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.27,28

He was married to Edith M. before 1930. Edith M.1 was born about 1880 in Iowa. She appeared on the census in 1930 in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois.29

11.  Inez G. "Gertie" POWELL1 was born in Mar 1881 in Illinois.7 She appeared on the census in 1900 in Clarence, Shelby County, Missouri.7 She appeared on the census in 1910 in Shelby County, Missouri. She appeared on the census in 1920 and 1930 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.30,31  She died after 1930. Newspaper account of those attending the funeral of Frank Powell (brother) states that Mrs. Frank Carter attended, and the obituary of Frank Powell references a sister, Mrs. Gertie Carter of Kansas City.

She was married to Frank L. CARTER after 1900. Frank L. CARTER1 was born about 1874 in Indiana.30 He appeared on the census in 1920 and 1930 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.30,31  Inez G. "Gertie" POWELL and Frank L. CARTER had the following children:
