Chapter 1: Pages 3-4

Introductory

As an introduction to the following sketch, a remark or two may not be inappropriate. And first, in the preparation of the work, the design at the outset was merely to give some account of the very earliest schools, but circumstances, like the links of a chain, seemed to join and follow each other so closely that no stopping place appeared at which a break might properly be made: and so the record has been continued, though much more briefly and with fewer particulars of the latest schools, till the present time.

Again, the writer knows little personally, of the schools, teachers and methods of teaching previous to the year 1839, but considerable effort has been made to obtain reliable information on these points, and as some who participate in the schools, either as teachers or pupils, are still living and accessible, the effort has been measurably successful. And while it will be impossible to name all who have been thus helpful, not only in giving information but also by manifesting great interest in the success of the work, yet the obligation is no less deeply felt and appreciated.

And lastly, it may be added, that while the aim has been to be entirely accurate as to names, places and dates, a few errors may have occurred, especially in dates. One’s memory of these, unless associated with some important event in life, cannot always be depended upon for accuracy. But in this account of the schools it is claimed that names, places and dates are all approximately correct.
