Henderson County was formed in 1841 out of Warren County and was named for Willaim Henderson, native of Philadelphia and officer in the War of 1812. He served as Sheriff for 6 years. Postmaster for 4 years and represented Warren and Henderson Counties in the Illinois Legislature.
It's situated on the western border of the state and has eight townships. Countys surrounding it are Mercer to the north, Warren to the east, McDonough and Hancock to the south and the Mississippi to the west.
