Biskopskulla Museum In Sweden
Biskopskulla
The museum has a fascinating exhibit about the followers of Erik Jansson who emigrated from Biskopskulla in 1846 and founded the Bishop Hill colony in America . The exhibit contains court records and other memorabilia about the emigrants. Cassette tapes are available for self-guiding tours around the museum. In 1846, some 1,200 people followed the charismatic, self-taught preacher Erik Jansson to the United States . The Swedes were skillful farmers, tradespeople, and business people, but by the spring of 1850, the prophet Erik Jansson had been murdered. Although his doctrine died out, the colony still exists today.
The museum has many visitors during a year, individuals as well as groups and charters. Visitors from the U.S. are also among the visitors.
Valuable information and books about the emigration, photographs and other historical materials concerning the Bishop Hill Colony are here.. In connection to the museum is an exhibition of Olof Krans-reproductions of the Bishop Hill colony and portrait of the old settlers.
