Obit in the Geneseo Herald:
Mrs. Emily DeBates died Saturday, Marcy 17, 1900 at the age of 45 years from intestinal obstruction. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband Charles DeBates, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Slutts, of Chicago , and Mrs. Florence Dunbar of Atksinson, and a little son Willy aged 5 years; also three brothers here, Peter, John and Ferdinand Verbecke and one sister Mrs. Ungande of Rock Island . She is a native of Holland and came to this country about 25 years ago. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. DePoorter at the Catholic church on Tuesday. She was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Atkinson, where her first husband Peter Knudde was laid away eight years ago. We all feel great sympathy for the bereaved ones left behind.
Mr. Charles DeBates, Mrs. Mary Slutts and Mrs. Florence Dunbar wish to extend to friends and neighbors who have been so kind to them in the sad bereavement and afflication that shadowed their home their earnest gratitude which is too deep for full expression in words. They will never forget the kindness shown.
(Note: The spelling should be Emilie Verbeck or Verbeke DeBates)
