
Galva School History Timeline
- 1855 -Galva built the original North School about where F.U. White is now. The grades were 1-8 and the principal was Frank Babcock. Galva built the school as a draw to developers and future citizens.
- 1873 -An addition(s) to the original North School was built to make the school both a high school and grade school. Commencement, plays and basketball were held in the old Opera house downtown.
- 1894 -Galva replaced the original framed grade and high school with a larger stone building. It was dedicated on February 15, 1895
- 1914 -Lincoln School opens
- 1931 -Galva started to build the Morgan Road high school. The school was dedicated on November 4, 1932 with a bond issue of $118,000.
- 1950 -The old stone F.U. White high school burned down.
- 1951 -The Jr. High on Morgan Road was attached/built onto the high school.
- 1952 - The new F.U. White, Bishop Hill and Burns schools were dedicated.
- 1966 - The town of Galva started to build the new one level high school on North Center Avenue.
- 1967 -Lincoln Grade School was closed.
- 1991 -The High School on North Center Avenue built more classrooms for a new Jr. High.
- 1991 -The Middle school was made into the Galva Elementary school. The official “Move” was in 1991.
- 2005 -The F.U. White school still lives. Currently there is a pre-school, a private business and the Chamber of Commerce meets within. (as of 11/2/2006)
Did Ya Know….
1,837 G.H.S. students graduated from1932 to1967. An average of 52 students per year.
Three girls graduated from the first graduating class in 1876, one boy in 1877.
The most to graduate was in 1965 with 81, the lowest was 30, in 1945 and 1950.
35 architects applied to build the high school on Morgan Road . A number of sites were offered but Morgan Road was finally picked, obviously.
Ground was broken for the Morgan Road high school on September 18, 1931 .
The corner stone for the Morgan Road high school was laid on December 2, 1931 . Our Mrs. Johnson, from Jr. High, wrote the history of Galva Schools and H.M. Robertson wrote the biography of F.U. White. Both sets of papers are inside the cornerstone.
