Marvin A. Damron
KEWANEE - Marvin A. Damron, 64, of Kewanee, died at 6:36 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, in the emergency room at Kewanee Hospital.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at First United Methodist Church, Kewanee, the Rev. Robert Foulk officiating. Visitation is from 4 to 9 this evening at the church. Burial will be in Hamilton, Ill., Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, of which he was a member; the American Cancer Society; the American Heart Association; the Leukemia Society of America, Illinois Chapter; or Kewanee High School. Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Sept. 14, 1936, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Edwards) Damron. He married Patricia Ann Rickert July 28, 1957.
She survives, as do four sons, Dr. Timothy A. (Leatha) Damron of Syracuse, N.Y., Michael M. (Sharon) Damron of El Paso, Texas, Patrick A. (Leisa) Damron of Kewanee and Cuong (Shelly) Quach of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Mike (Deborah A.) Townsend of Kewanee and Mrs. Cuong (Lan) Tu of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Udell (Janet) Meyers of Quantico, Va.; and 13 grandchildren, Neil K. Damron, Terry Failor, Joseph Failor, Maria Chavez, Haile E. Townsend, Melanie M. Townsend, Ryan L. Rumbold, Rachel J. Rumbold, Madelyn I. Damron, Benjamin Tu, Franklin Tu. Catherine Quach and Calvin Quach. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild, Casie Failor.
He was educated in Hamilton, Ill., and was a graduate of Hamilton High School. He was a member of the Illinois National Guard, serving in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1961. He was a 1958 graduate of the University of Illinois, where he also received his master's degree in 1963. He received his administrative certificate at the University of Colorado in 1966.
He was agriculture teacher in Hamilton from 1958 to 1961, then was agriculture instructor at Kewanee High School in 1962-1967, serving as 4-H leader and adviser to FFA and Student Council. In 1967 the Kewanee School Board appointed him Kewanee High School principal and the school district's director of transportation.
His memberships included the Kewanee Kiwanis Club, of which he was past president, treasurer and vice president and a Hixson Award recipient; the Illinois Principals Association; the Illinois Association of Secondary School Principals, of which he had been a state officer; the National Association of Secondary School Principals; the Illinois Vocational Teachers, for which he was a section chairman; Future Farmers of America; Henry County Youth Service Bureau, where he was a member of the board of directors; the Drug and Alcohol Task Force; Sauk Trail Organization for Preservation; the Area Board for Child Development; Ryan's Round Barn Life Member; ILCAAP; Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture; National Alpha Zeta Fraternity of Agriculture; Alpha Tau Alpha Education Fraternity; Alpha Gamma Rho Agriculture Fraternity; and the University of Illinois Alumni Association.
He was a certified lay speaker at his church, and his hobbies included the John Deere Two Cylinder Club, the Lionel Train Collectors Club of America, the Mackinaw Canoe Club and the Train Collectors Association.
