Family Names in the Ulah Area:

Ulah, and the surrounding area, was filled with interesting people and a sprinkling of characters, too. No history would be complete without mentioning the Morrises, Pratts, Johnstons, Gustafsons, Grammers, Rogers, Schumakers, Hiers, Smiths, Stephens, Johnsons, Vincents, Vinstrands, Perkins, Olsons, Munsons and Naslunds, to name some of the more prominent families down through the years. The Pleasant Hill or East Ulah group included the Rapps, Wexells, Petersons, Hobleys, Johnstons, Ericsons, Olsons, and Kellys (Galvaland Magazine July-August1977).

Today, only a few families live in the little settlement. The church was sold March 7,1953 to Raymond Schnowske for $605, and the kitchen and dining room were sold to Walter Nelson for $450; both had to be moved by January 1, 1954 (Galvaland Magazine March 1983). A flower garden was planted on the site. There is a storage facility for agricultural chemicals, but little else. On the edge of the village, a confinement hog operation is in business.

Descendants of the original settlers still live in the area, however. Schumakers, Wileys, DeDeckers, Nelsons, Tomlinsons, Vincents, Wexells, Rapps, Johnsons, and others, keep the memories of the small village alive in their thoughts and hearts.
