The Schools of the Ulah Area
Pleasant Hill School , District 63, was located two miles east and one-half mile south of Ulah. A directory for 1920-1921 lists school board president Andrew Rapp, clerk Fred Johnston, and Bert Peterson as the other director. Rosa Peterson became clerk in 1921, and Fred Wexell later was elected president. Some of the names of pupils enrolled at Pleasant Hill include: Willis Johnston, Arnie Anderson, Melvin Johnston, Herbert Anderson, Henry Hier, Harry Kelly, Helen Rapp, Helen Hier, Ethel Ericson, Myrtle Spiegel, Maud Rapp, Leila Hobley, Ray Hier, Walter Hulstedt, Earl Anderson, Harold Peterson, Lloyd Hobley, Raymond Johnston, Wesley Ericson, Lloyd Spiegel, Milford Peterson, Anna Peterson, and Anita Anderson. Names of some of the teachers include: Nanie Dahlberg, Elsie Nordstrom (Hallquist), Valla Cummins (Greep), Rena B. Winne, Josephine Page (Ouart), and Myrtle Belscamper ( Johnston ) (Galvaland Magazine, September 1977).

Pleasant Valley School , District 67, was located one mile south of Ulah. Information about the early history of the school is incomplete, but the Ulah Methodist congregation was organized there in the Spring of 1866. The school supported a large enrollment, often with two teachers being employed, although it was only a one-room schoolhouse. Directors of the Pleasant Valley school during the 1920’s included: Roy Schumaker, president; Leonard A. Johnson, clerk, and Herman Stephens, member. They served at least through 1924, according to a Henry County Directory. Directors in 1928-1929 were Julius Wiley, president; Harry W. Harris, clerk, and Roy Schumaker, member. In 1930-31 Mr. Wiley again was president, Roy Schumaker was clerk, and John Rogers was a member. A list of some of the teachers include: Lovina Olson, Mrs. Walter H. Larson of Galva, Mrs. Fred Fincher, Nannie Swanson, Hazel Partridge, Miss Cummins, Ruth Whitman, Goldie Rapp, Helen Philblad, Rueben Nelson, and later, Lillian Samuelson and Mrs. Good. Names of some of the pupils in the 1920’s include: Leonard Schumaker, Kenneth Stephens, Rueben Nelson, Kenneth Wongstrom, Ruth Hepner, Lucille Jeffries, Charles Ludington, Leroy Johnson, Benjamin Stephens, Clarence Hepner, Charles Jeffries, Robert Anderson, Russell Schumaker, Vinton Johnston, V. Wongstrom, Blaine Harris, Ralph Schumaker, James Rogers, Raymond Rogers, Ralph Rogers, Robert Rogers, Mary Rogers, Fred Wiley, Russell Wiley, Ruby Wiley, and Irene Wiley (Galvaland Magazine, September 1977).

A copy of the Christmas program given at the school in 1939 lists a Recitation by pre-school children - Lowell Bentley, Eileen Naslund, Glenn Nelson, and Joan Nelson.

In addition to numerous songs, there were rhythm band numbers, drum solo (Ivan Quayle) and selections by the Pleasant Valley Cowboys (Galvaland Magazine, December 1977).
