The Ulah Sewing Circle
The Ulah Sewing Circle was organized in the fall of 1914, and played a major part in overseeing the activities of the church. Esther Atkinson Tarleton, Gladys Vincent Kraus and Gladys Smith Fehlman were instrumental in starting the circle. The first regular meeting was held October 1, 1914 , and was held at the home of Mrs. Frank Smith with eighteen Charter members. They were: Mrs. Will Schumaker, Mrs. Fred Johnston, Mrs. Will Johnston, Mrs. Albert Hulstead, Mrs. Henry Dollander, Martha Dollander DeDecker, Gladys Smith Fehlman, Gladys Krause, Mrs. Frank Smith, Mrs. Martha Stephens, Mrs. Lettie Rolin, Mrs. J. W. Slater, Esther Tarleton, Mabel Slater Peterson, Mrs. Frank Vincent, Mrs. Julius Wiley, Clara Johnson, Mrs. Hallie Stephens, Mrs. Joe Atkinson, and Mrs. Charlie Grant. Gladys Smith Fehlman was the first President of the club. The ladies were the main fund-raising body, and planned and carried out the feeding services for the Ulah Field Days (which began in 1930), and for church suppers. They held bake sales and quilting bees and sales of the finished sewn items brought in revenue for the church. (Galvaland Magazine July-August 1978). After the church closed in about the late 1940’s, the ladies of the Ulah Sewing Circle continued to meet monthly until the late 1980’s, when they disbanded.
