William Stone Enslow, Civil war veteran and pioneer Kewanee resident, died at his home, 740 Gilbert street , at 5:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. He had been in failing health for six years and had been confined to his bed since July 6. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia.
. Mr Enslow, son of john L. and Harriet Stone Enslow, was one of a family of nine children. He was born in Paris , N.Y. , Jan. 11, 1847 . When he was eight years old he came with his parents to Knoxville , Ill. , and from there he moved to Kewanee in 1855. His father purchased a farm of 400 acres east of Kewanee, including the site of the new electric power plant which is being erected. A short time after the purchase of the farm the Burlington railroad was laid out along the property. After the death of the father, Nov. 18, 1862 , the farm was divided, William receiving the part north of the railroad, where the aviation field was recently located. For a number of years the family home was the log house which was built on the homestead. During the Civil war Mr Enslow enlisted for a period of 100 days in Company H, 134th Ill. Vol. Inf., the company receiving a special letter of thanks signed President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War. Edwin M. Stanton. Mr. Enslow, in February, 1865, enlisted in Company A, 42nd Ill. Vol., Inf., serving until the close of the war. With the exception of a short period of residence in Nebraska and Iowa , Mr. Enslow had always been a resident of this community.
He was married in 1869 to Miss Susan M. Ladd, who survives. Four children were born to the union, a daughter, Mrs. Amy Camery, dying in 1911. The surviving children are: Warren Enslow, Kewanee; Mrs. Ruth Shade, Mitchell. S. Dak.; Mrs., Dade Ray, Phoenix , Ariz. There are six grandchildren. A brother, James Enslow of this city, is the only survivor of the family of nine children. These brothers and sisters preceded Mr. Enslow in death: George B., John E., Emily A., Emeline M., Lovina R., Charles W., and Albert A. Enslow. Mr. Enslow united with the First Methodist church of this city in 1871.
