Garrett (Garett) Cemetery

Garrett Family Cemetery is located in the southeast quarter of Section 20 of Victoria Township (Snakeden Hollow). This land is owned by the Illinois State Department of Natural Resources and is open to the public during the summer until October.

Go north on Route 28 from the  Williamsfield Cemetery and follow it as it curves its way north. When you pass 2030E (where Salem Cemetery is located), keep following Route 28 as it turns right. As you continue north, you will see a farm field on the left. Stop when you reach the end of this farm field and the beginning of a forest.  There will be a chain with a sign stating "Authorized vehicles only". Park your car there and walk the grassy lane (in a westerly direction) along the edge of the farm field...about 2/10 of a mile. The grassy lane will curve to your left (southward) and  then curve westward again. When it begins to curve southward again, stop and veer to the right into the forest. There should be a small trail to follow. Follow it as it curves to the left. There you will clearly see four stones in a row. It's apparent that a kind person has been keeping the stones in good shape and clearing off some of the trees and debris.

Note: George R. Garrett was the patriarch of the family buried in this little cemetery. He and his family live in Knox Township. Without further research, it's hard to say what happened to Rebecca, his widow. We couldn't find her buried with George. There is a Rebecca Garrett, age 72, born in North Carolina, listed in the 1860 census, Sugar Creek Precinct, Logan County, Illinois, as living with R. B. & Elizabeth Ewing and family. It might be her...

George's son, John S., lived in Victoria Township, so I'm assuming that this cemetery was on John S. Garrett's land. He disappears from the scene sometime between 1850 and 1860 (according to the census). I'm also assuming he died during this time period, even though we couldn't find his stone in this cemetery. Matilda, his wife, moved to Copley Township after John S. died.

There is also a John Garret listed in the 1850 Census (Orange Township) who might have been George's brother. He also died sometime between 1850 and 1860. I noticed there is a John Garrett who is buried in the Brush Creek Cemetery (Cedar Township)...it might be him. The second generation of these Garretts moved to Cedar Township as noticed in the 1860 census...Mary, John's widow, went to live with John H. & Catherine Garrett in Cedar Township. See census below.

If you are a descendant of the Garretts, we'd love to hear from you!
