Henderson
Cemetery
Henderson Cemetery is located in Henderson Township in Section 14,
north east of the town of Henderson. It is a
beautifully maintained cemetery with many historical markers. A few are
listed below.

Jessee Witt (1760-1852)
Age 91 years 11 months 23 days
A Revolutionary soldier enlisted Jan. 1, 1777 in
the 10th Virginia Reg. Col. William Davies
commanding. Discharged Sep. 6, 1779.
To perpetuate the memory of an unsung hero,
this marker is erected 1949 by
Helena Witt Beatty, A. D. Hickman, Fred Dunbar,
Glenn Glass, and Martin Sutor.

This
stone quarried in flint hills of Kentucky.
Came by boat by Ohio, Mississippi and
Illinois Rivers, to Peoria.
Freighted by ox team to mill site.
Presented by a great grandson Glenn Glass.

Capt.
Calvin Glass (1794 - 1878)
Arrived by ox team from Ohio in 1830.
Owned and platted most of this village
site and gave this area as a free cemetery.
Commissioned Captain at Rock Island
during Black Hawk War. Built first water
mill in Knox County 1833
on Henderson
Creek. This marker erected in 1949 in
grateful remembrance by Fred Dunbar,
Glenn Glass and Albert Hickman.

Henry Mumphrey
A Georgia mulatto slave who had sold for $700
at auction. Entered the Union lines prior to the
battle of Atlanta and gave valuable information.
He later became Gen. Sherman's cook & served to
the War's end. Washington Dunbar of Henderson,
who served throughout the war in the 63rd Ill. Inf.,
when discharged at Peoria in 1865, brought
Mumphrey home and kept him two years. He then
lived with Harry Dunbar's until he died at the age
of 89 and was nicely buried here in Nov. of 1891.
