Philip Nance Memorial
The Philip Nance Memorial is located in the
southeast quarter of Section 9, on
2200N, between 200E & 300E. It is right across the street from the
Rice-Blue Cemetery. Many thanks to the people who take care
of his tombstone!


"The
first death in Knox County was that of a young man, Philip Nance, which
occurred January 9, 1829, in Henderson township, and was buried in Section 9.
Thomas McKee, who came the fall before, was present at his death and funeral
and was instrumental in directing a suitable stone at the grave. A few years
later, the people of the vicinity of Henderson raised money and erected an iron
fence around the grave."
"First Death - The first death occurred January 9, 1829. A young man named Philip Nance, aged 17, who was buried on section 16, Henderson township. His grave is alone.
