Marriage

Lieutenant Morris L. Shively who spent the Christmas vacation at the home of his parents in Knoxville was married Friday evening December 27th to Miss Lela Chesney at Wichita, Kansas.  Miss Chesney is well known in Abingdon where she attended Hedding College.   Lieutenant Shively is in the U. S. Marine Corps and is now stationed in Galveston, Texas, where they will make their home for a time.

  

Pre-nuptial Party

 A pre-nuptial surprise party was held for Miss Wanda Byram at the home of Mrs. Lloyd Nelson, east from this city (Abingdon), celebrating her approaching marriage to Glade Porter of Macomb.  The presents were in the nature of a kitchen shower for the bride-to-be.

E. J. Thompson of Chicago and K. G. Thompson of Galesburg spent the early part of the week with Mr. and Mrs. James Johnston at the New Hebard Hotel.

 Sergeant V. C. Crump left Wednesday morning for Peoria to resume his old position with the Cutter-Wrigley Coal and Ice Company of that place.  Sergeant Crump was recently discharged from service.

 Five children in the family of Henry Bragg, south from this city, are suffering from the influenza.  Four of the children took ill on Monday and the fifth became a victim on Tuesday.

 On account of illnesses the following substitutes have been made in the teaching force at the public schools this week: Miss Ada Mathes for Miss Mary Buckley; Miss Josephine McIntosh for Miss Pansye Means.

Harry Becker of Ann Arbor, Michigan, arrived Saturday morning to attend the funeral of his father.

Rev. A. C. Mathes occupied the pulpit at Lewistown Sunday.

John Cation left Friday noon for Texas for a brief vacation.  He left in company with a party of landmen and expects to be gone about a week.

Rev. J. L. Shively, J. C. South, E. H. McElwain, W. H. Yates, and C. W. Huggins are attending the Methodist convention in Abingdon today.

 

Maquon Personal News:

Ethmer Stevenson residing southwest from this city is reported ill this week.

Mrs. O. B. Ouderkirk and child, west of this place, are on the sick list this week.

Influenza is decidedly on the wane in this section.  The local schools are in good condition and the recent epidemic seems for the time being at least practically wiped out.

E. Hughes has been selected to serve on the grand jury at the February term in Galesburg.
