Marriages (G-J)
by groom's last name
Mr. William R. Horton and Miss Verna Cater, both of this city, were married quietly in Chicago on Wednesday of last week. This is a big surprise to the many acquaintances of the estimable young couple as no one had any inkling of the event until the receipt of wedding cards. Both are well known here and highly esteemed. The groom is a member of Horton and Hubbell, the undertaker firm, and is upright and trustworthy in his dealings. The bride is one of the prettiest young ladies in the city and ? for her many good qualities by all who knew her. The surprise will no doubt make the congratulations all the more hardy and spontaneous.

The Tenth Anniversary
Wednesday evening being the tenth anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Halstrom, a large number of their friends entered their residence on East Waters Street and unceremoniously took possession. Mr. and Mrs. Halstrom were completely surprised, and submitted without a murmur. At the proper time, Dr. Lambert, on behalf of the assemblage, presented to Mr. and Mrs. Halstrom, in a very neat little speech, the various presents which were brought, to which the host responded. The following is a list of presents. Two large patent rocking chairs trimmed in velvet, one hanging lamp, a chamber set, and triple-plated silver knives and forks. The refreshments which were served were partaken of with a hearty good will. It was a late hour when the merry crowd adjourned. [Peter Halstrom married Caroline Paulson on 6/27/1871.]
