Hymeneal
(Galesburg's Republican-Register, Saturday, August 20, 1887, page 1, submitted by Janine Crandell)

The marriage of Mr. John Whalen and Miss Mary Cole occurred in the Catholic Church Monday, and was witnessed by a large number. The bride appeared charming and was most beautifully attired in a pink dress, with natural flowers for ornaments. Her veil was of white tulle. The attendants were the groom's brother and the bride's sister. The ceremony was impressively performed by Father Miller, of Quincy. The newly married couple immediately repaired to the bride's home, where a reception was in progress during the day, attended by a large number of acquaintances. Both bride and groom were the recipients of useful and beautiful presents. They are both well known and popular young people, and we unite our best wishes with those of many others that their wedded life may be a very happy one.

The following from the Commercial Advertiser, of Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, of July 29th, concerns a son of the honorable J. S. Winter, a former resident of Galesburg:

"Last evening, Mr. John W. Winter was united in marriage to Miss Maggie Kruger at the residence of Mr. S. Roth. The front of the house was most brilliantly illuminated with colored lanterns and presented an attractive appearance. A large lanai had been erected in the rear of the house, and it was decorated with flags. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. E. G. Beckwith, D. D., the bridal couple standing under a handsome wedding bell of white flowers. After the ceremony a reception was held, which was attended by about two hundred invited guests. An elegant supper was served in the lanai. Hon. S. B. Dole proposed the health of the bride, and called upon Mr. Charles Creighton to respond. The latter did so, and then proposed the health of Mr. and Mrs. Roth, the host and hostess. The Royal Hawaiian Band played appropriate selections during the evening."

Golden Anniversary
(The New Market Herald, New Market, Taylor County, Iowa, March 23, 1922, submitted by Linda Kestner)

The announcement of the Golden Anniversary Celebration of Jennie and Roger VICKERY reads as follows:

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Vickery came from western Iowa to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary yesterday in the locality in which they were married. This observance took place in the home of their daughter, Mrs. Merritt W. Campbell, 1810 Thirtieth Street, Rock Island, where they were joined by all of their children, some of their grandchildren and two life-long friends who witnessed the ceremony fifty years ago. Roger Vickery and Miss Jennie Barnard were married at Rio in March 14, 1872. About eight years later they went to a newer country locating in Taylor County, IA where they bought farm land and engaged in farming. Mr. Vickery was twice elected sheriff of the county and at the end of his term the family continued to reside in Bedford until the children finished their school courses. Then Mr. and Mrs. Vickery returned to their farm, later retiring to a home in New Market, IA. The son and daughters are R. E. Vickery of Grand Junction, CO; Mrs. Ray Waterman and Mrs. Ralph Burgess both of Minneapolis; Mrs. Oren Harris of New Market, IA and Mrs. M. W. Campbell of Rock Island. Grandchildren present were Donald Burgess of Minneapolis, Marjorie Harris of New Market and Frances Orth of Rock Island. Others who partook of the anniversary dinner were Ralph Burgess and M. W. Campbell, sons-in-law and Mrs. Amelia Arnold of Chicago and Mrs. Ida Hinchliff of Galesburg. Mrs. Arnold and Mrs. Hinchliff attended the ceremony fifty years ago, it having been in the home of Mrs. Hinchliff's parents, where Mrs. Vickery and Mrs. Arnold were reared. Mr. Vickery enlisted for service in the Civil War at 16 years of age and served with what was known as the Peoria Battery of Artillery which was active at Vicksburg and in Louisiana.
