Past and Present


Identifying all the schools and acquiring information and pictures about the schools is a work in progress.  I compiled this list of schools from USGS and their Geographic Names Information System.  With their system, you can also generate maps that will help you locate the schools. I also bought a 1948 Plat book which has many of the schools identified. If you would like to contribute information about the schools in Knox County, I would be most grateful.

News Update: Marie Olinger has compiled a wonderful book called "Rural Schools Out of the Past" which has over 200 pages of pictures and stories from students or teachers of rural schools.  It also has pictures of 50 schools in Knox County and close by. The cost is $25 plus postage of $4 or make arrangements to pick up.  To order the book please write to:
