JOSEPH ARMSTRONG married EUPHANIS ALSTON. They had a son named
William Armstrong who was born in Castle Sowerby, Cumberland County,
Cumberland, England in 1799, was christened on July 14th, 1799
in Castle Sowerby. This William Armstrong married Eleanor and they
had a son named Joseph who was christened on July 19th, 1830, in
Castle Sowerby. JOSEPH and EUPHANIS ARMSTRONG had another son named JOSEPH ARMSTRONG; he was born in 1804, he married JANE BEAKBY, Nov 28th, 1825 in Hesket, Cumberland, JANE was born in 1808. JOSEPH and JANE ARMSTRONG'S children were: Mary Ann Armstrong born in 1830 in England. William Armstrong born in 1831 in England. Joseph Armstrong born 1837 in England. Euphanis Armstrong born 1841 in England, named after her Grandmother. Robert Armstrong born 1843 in England. Margaret Ann Armstrong born July 6th, 1845 in Gateshead, Durham, England, she was christened on April 10th, 1846 Isabella Jane Armstrong born in 1849 in Illinois. Isabella Jane Armstrong is the child the Jane Armstrong was carrying when she came by ship to America from England. William Armstrong born in 1799 in Castle Sowerby, he was christened in Castle Sowerby, in the county of Cumberland on Aug 19th, 1799, his parents were Joseph Armstrong and Euphanis Alston. (Note: The county of Cumberland is no longer called Cumberland. It is called CUMBRIA, it is a combination of two counties, Cumberland and Westmoreland.) William Armstrong is on the 1840 Census of Knox County, Illinois. William Armstrong either emigrated to America with his brother JOSEPH ARMSTRONG; was a blacksmith by trade, William came first and JOSEPH followed later, or they came to America together. They first lived in Knox Township in 1850, then Ontario Township in 1860. There they owned a house and farm, valued at $3000.00. They later lived in Knoxville, Illinois in 1870; they were older and retired by then. In the Knoxville cemetery, it says on William Armstrong’s gravestone that he was a native of Castle Sowerby, Cumberland, England, they do have Sowerby spelled wrong on the gravestone, but from records in England we know that he was born in Castle Sowerby, Cumberland, England. Castle Sowerby dates back to the Saxon times, shortly before the Norman Invasion of 1066, King Edward the Confessor gave the Lordship of Sowerby to Swein Fitz Alric for services rendered. Today it is a little more than a few houses and the church of St Kentigern. Castle Sowerby is a parish about halfway between Penrith and Carlisle. William Armstrong died January 25th, 1850, only 51 years old, his brother JOSEPH ARMSTRONG died October, 17th, 1876. There is a Joseph L. Armstrong buried in the Oneida cemetery. He died 1899, 43 years old, we believe him to be the Grandson of William and Eleanor Armstrong or the Grandson of Joseph and JANE ARMSTRONG. JANE (BEAKBY) ARMSTRONG, the wife of JOSEPH ARMSTRONG, died in 1893, in Illinois. Our JOSEPH ARMSTRONG was brother to William Armstrong. JOSEPH came without his family, he worked as a blacksmith. He was very unhappy and would get downhearted missing his wife and children, so his employer advanced him some of his wages, so he could send for his wife and children a little sooner. JOSEPH ARMSTRONG’S wife was JANE (BEAKBY) ARMSTRONG. She was pregnant with their youngest daughter at the time that the family set sail. The baby was born in 1849 in Illinois, so they must have left England in 1849, they sailed to America, Jane had 5 or 6 children with her on the voyage over. MARGARET ANN ARMSTRONG was one of the children on the voyage with her mother Jane Armstrong. She would have been about three years old then. They traveled in the steerage of the ship (the lower part of the ship) the third class section. While they were on the ship coming to America, a boy was found in a barrel, he was a stowaway and they tied him to the mast. MARGARET ANN ARMSTRONG was born July 6th, 1845 in Gateshead, England, she died May 6th, 1930 in California. She is buried in Oakwood cemetery in Chatsworth, Ca. JOSEPH and JANE ARMSTRONG had seven children. They are all on the 1850 and 1860 census of Knox County, Illinois, Joseph is listed as a farmer on the 1860 Census of Knox County, Illinois. JOSEPH and JANE ARMSTRONG are on the 1870 Census of Knox County, Illinois. He was listed with no business, so he must have retired; he was 68 years old. Jane was 63 years old and their daughter Isabella Jane Armstrong was still living at home with her parents; she was 21 years old. All the other children had married and left home. MARGARET ANN ARMSTRONG born 1845 in England married FLETCHER VAN AUKEN on Oct 18th, 1863 in Knox County, Illinois. Euphanis Armstrong born 1841 in England, married Calvin Van Auken, March 5th, 1862 in Knox County, Illinois. Euphanis Armstrong was named after her Grandmother in England, Euphanis (Alston) Armstrong married to Joseph Armstrong. Calvin Van Auken was the son of Aaron Van Auken and Catherine ( Ostrander) Van Auken of Oneida, Illinois. Hannah Van Auken, born 1827 in NY, the daughter of Aaron Van Auken and Catherine (Ostrander) Van Auken, Hannah married Joseph W Armstrong. maybe the son of Joseph and Jane Armstrong, both born in England. Isabella Jane Armstrong born in 1849 in Illinois married John Fox on Feb 21st, 1874 in Knox County, Illinois. |
