HUSBAND - James HASTIE
CHRISTENING: James Hastie
was christened 19 April 1812 at Crawford, Lanarkshire, Scotland the son of John
Hastie and Jean Sloan.
MARRIAGE: James Hastie and
Ann McDonald were married in Schnectady, New York Feb 26, 1840. We have a
wedding spoon with the date and her initials on it This is a Scottish tradition
for the groom to give a silver spoon to the bride. We are not sure they were
married in Schnectady. We also have their wedding pictures in pastels. We also
have letters dated from this time period.
BIRTH: James Hastie was born
April 17, 1812 in Scotland to John Hastie and Jean Sloan see
biography in "History of
Knox County" Illinois page 679.
DEATH: James Hastie died 10
Feb 1879, Sparta Twp., Knox Co., Illinois. There is no death certificate. James
left a large farm estate in 1879. On the first page it mentions telegrams of
James' death sent to his sister in Manchester, Iowa (either Mary Filer or
Elizabeth McFern), two telegrams to Addison W. Hastie of Deadwood, S.D. Also
various payments for coffin, ice, driver of the hearse, medical attendance on
deceased, medicine and digging of the grave totalling $51.95. Son John Hastie
gave an account of the estate 21 April 1879 and paid the money owed. James'
second wife, Maria, was administratrix. There is a very long list of articles in
the estate. Probate was discharged March 21, 1881.

Ontario Cemetery, Ontario Twp., Knox Co., Illinois. James is buried next to his
first wife Ann McDonald and Maria Lyon, his second wife.

BIRTH: Ann McDonald was born
in New York about 1812 according to her tombstone in Ontario Cemetery, Knox
County, Illinois.
DEATH: Ann Hastie died in
June of 1855 after moving to Illinois. She drowned in an animal trough There was
some question about her death and John Hastie explained it in one of his letters
to Rosalind Briggs.
BURIAL: Ann is buried in
Ontario Cemetery, Ontario Township, Knox County, Illinois. She has a tombstone.

injured when he and 11 other members of his Reg't charged across railroad tracks
at Appomattox Station VA. His horse fell on him injuring the small of his back,
kidneys, bladder and urinary organs.

Duffell, Mrs. Ed, for many years a resident of Knox County died at her home in
this city (Monmouth) Thursday morning of consumption. Mrs. Duffell lived for
years at Rio where her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Van Gilder reside. Before moving to
Monmouth she and her husband lived at Alexis. She leaves, her husband, parents,
following brothers and sisters, John VanGilder of Ontario, Isaac of Dawn
Missouri, Mrs. Nancy Matson of Rio, Mrs. Lucy Daves of Alexis. The body will be
taken to Rio tomorrow morning for funeral service and burial at Congregational
church.

W.R. VanGilder and family were called to Roseville Saturday evening by the
serious illness of their daughter and sister, Mrs. Harry Bair, who died Monday
evening. The remains will be taken to Rio for burial and the funeral service was
held at that place at 10 o'clock, conducted by Reverand Nettie Moore Churchill,
pastor of the U. B. Church at Roseville.

NANCY I. MATSON
Mrs. Nancy I. Matson, 74, died at 6:30 a.m. Saturday in a nursing home in
Maquoketa. She had been ill about one year.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. (CST) Tuesday in the Schilling funeral
home. Burial will be in the Erie cemetery. Body will be brought to the funeral
home where friends may call this afternoon and evening.
Mrs. Matson was born June 20, 1882, in Sabula, daughter of Wesley and Susan
Smith VanGilder. She was reared and educated in Rio, Knox Co. ILL, and had lived
in Erie for 28 years. She was married Jan. 19, 1901, to Alfred Matson in
Galesburg who died in 1940. She was a member of the Methodist church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Mino Kamphuis of Clinton, Mrs. John
Jacobsen of Florence Ken., one son, Melvin Matson of Galesburg, ILL., nine
grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one
daughter, three sisters and two brothers.

ALFRED MATSON DIES IN MOLINE
Erie, ILL, July 22 -- (Special) -- Alfred Matson, 62, who had been ill several
years, died Saturday morning in a Moline hospital. The body was brought that
evening to the L. T. Slaymaker funeral home here.
Mr. Matson was born in Sweden, Dec. 26, 1877, and came to Rio, Knox Co. Ill., in
1881. On Jan. 19, 1901, he was married to Nancy Van Gilder. The family came to
Erie in 1914. He served as section foreman here until 1933.
He is survived by the widow; his aged mother, Mrs. Anna Matson, 93, of
Galesburg; three daughters Mrs. Mino Kamphuis, Clinton, Iowa; Mrs. John
Jacobsen, Morrison; and Mrs. Jay Dobson, Erie; one son, Melvin Matson,
Galesburg; three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, a
sister, Nellie, and a brother, Nels.
MATSON FUNERAL RITES CONDUCTED
Erie, ILL. -- The funeral of Alfred Matson, 62, was held at 2 o'clock Monday
morning, accompanied by the Rev. Ralph Kofoed, pastor of the Methodist church,
officiating.
Pallbearers were James Ryan , A.H. Miller, V. S. Richardson, George Stanbro,
Willard Henery and Clair Dobson. Burial was in Erie cemetery. Flower-bearers
were Mrs. Clair Dobson and Mrs. Kenneth James.

Grace W. Jacobsen, 76, of 507 N. Genesee St., Morrison, died today in Morrison
Community Hospital.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Morrison chapel of Bosma Funeral
Home, with burial in Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison. Rev. George McIlrath of
First Presbyterian Church of Morrison and Rev. Alvin Hook, visitation pastor,
will officiate. Visitation will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral
home.
She was born March 16, 1907, in Rio, Knox Co. Illinois, Ill., to Alfred and
Nancy VanGilder Matson. She was married to John J. Jacobsen Sept. 17, 1932, in
Morrison. He died Feb. 27, 1977. She attended Erie Grade School and was a
graduate of Erie High School. She was a member of Morrison First Presbyterian
Church. She lived in Morrison from 1932 to 1943 and upon retirement in 1970
returned to Morrison. She was a real estate broker for many firms around the
country.
Survivors include a brother, Melvin Matson of Galesburg, Ill; and several nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters.

Erie Ill., Sept. 20 --- (Special) --- Miss Grace Matson, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Alfred Matson of here was married Saturday to John J. Jacobsen of Morrison,
the wedding taking place at the Presbyterian parsonage in Morrison and the
ceremony performed by the Rev. H. C. Becker.
Mrs. Jacobsen is a graduate of the Erie Community high school and has been
employed in the local telephone exchange office here the past five years and
half.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacobsen have gone east for a short wedding trip and on their
return home will be at home at 113 Maple avenue in Morrison.

John Jacobsen, 73, of 507 N. Genesee St., Morrison, died Sunday at Morlon Plant
Hospital, Clearwater, Fla.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tomilson Funeral Home, Morrison. The
Rev. Paul DeBeer of First Presbyterian Church will officiate and burial will be
in Grove Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
He was born Oct. 9, 1903, the son of Julius and Johanna Hansen Jacobsen. He
married Grace Matson Sept. 17, 1932, in Morrison.
Mrs. Jacobsen had been president and manager of the Doall Co. and the Texaco and
City Services Gas Co.
He was a member of Clinton Moose Lodge, the American Association of retired
Persons and First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his widow, and a sister, Mrs. Les (Pauline) Johannsen, Miles.
He was preceded in death by five sisters.
