TATE. (1897) Mary E. Tate was born Feb. 2, 1840, in Hancock county, Ill., and died after a brief illness of three days of peritonitis, in Knoxville, Ill, June 13. As a child she was thoughtful and conscientious. At the early age of 12 years she was converted and united with the Methodist church at Rushville, Ill., and while quiet and retiring in her disposition and undemonstrative in her manner, she was always loyal to the church and consistent in her Christian life. Whilst not inclined to say much on the subject of religion, by her actions she was a "living epistle, known and read of all," and, "being dead, yet speaketh." For twenty-two years she had acted as assistant matron of the Knox county almshouse, and her earnest, straightforward course won for her the love and esteem of all with whom she had any dealings, and a host of friends and relations mourn her sudden death.

A touching scene was that, when early Tuesday morning before the time for the funeral services, the 1500 inmates were allowed to pass and view the remains of the one who had so tenderly and carefully watched over them and ministered to their wants. In sickness or trouble of any kind, day or night, she was always ready to assist in doing for the poor, helpless ones at the institution. The funeral was at the request of the superintendent and wife and other friends held at the county house, at 10:30 Tuesday morning, Rev. Mr. Boutman, of the M. E. church, and Rev. Mr. Sharples, of the Christian church assisting. The remains were interred in Knoxville cemetery.

The parents of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. Milton A. Tate, have passed away, as also have her brothers, Henry and Edward. She leaves two sisters, Elvira Tate, of Centerville, Ia., and Mrs. Ann Hungerford, of St. Louis, and these brothers, J. W. and T. B. Tate, Knoxville, Frank Tate, Columbia Falls, Mon., and Charles Tate, of Fargo, Minn.
