"AUNT BETTIE" THOMAS LEFT HER MARK
As a Cherished Friend To All
Page 55

Mary Elizabeth Thomas was born in 1839 at
Barry Pike County Illinois but moved to Menard
Count at the age of 12, with her parents. John and
Annis Watkins Thomas.
She grew up near Oakford and married Daniel D.
Thomas here in 1864. One daughter, Annis was born
to them but lived only fourteen months.
"Aunt Bettie" was noted for her gracious
hospitality. Any homeless, lonely, aged, friendless
person found a bountiful table and a sincere welcome
in Aunt Bettie;s home, especially in the winter months.
No thought of money was involved. It might be
said she left her mark in our community by adopting
the children of misfortune as her own.
