William Henry England (1862-1952) was born on July 11,
1862, and raised in Athens, Menard County, Illinois. He was only a year old when
his father, William Banks England, was killed in the Civil War Battle of
Chickamauga on September 20, 1863. William was raised by his mother, Martha Hall
England Swaringuin (daughter of James Wesley and Catherine Claypool Hall) and
step-father, Capt. Thomas A. Swaringuin, in Athens. In 1893, Will was operating
"The Old Reliable Drug and Book Store: Swaringuin and England", started by his
stepfather in Athens on North Main Street.
Will married Clara Sprouse, daughter of George Bailey and Miney Sprouse in
Athens in 1894. After a short time of living in Nebraska in 1909, the family
returned to Illinois. In 1920 Will was working in Athens as a hardware store
clerk, and his wife was a milliner. They were the parents of Willard P., Primm,
Thomas, Fred (Mabel Abbot), Zoel K. (Cecile M. Knox), Donald E. (Janet
Luttrell), and Velma (Gilbert Foster).
In the 1920 census he was listed as a head clerk at Churchillís Hardware in

three teen-aged boys and a young daughter to raise. William England died in
1952, and is buried in Hall Cemetery in Athens.
