Bessie Thomas Hardwick

Bessie Thomas Hardwick (1887-1972) was born September 29, 1887, in Tallula, Menard County, Illinois, but moved with her parents, John Thomas and Martha Ann Raikes Hardwick, near Indian Point, Illinois, before1893. She attended all nine grades at Indian Point School. After her marriage to William Michael Shannon on May 15, 1907, the couple lived on several different farms in Menard County near Petersburg, Tice, and Indian Point, before moving in 1924 to a home on the west side of North Main in Athens. Their daughter, Martha Pylena, was born in February 1908, when the couple lived in a log home near the Rock Creek Church off Route 97, between Petersburg and Springfield. Twins, Herbert Clellen and Doris Helen were born in 1912, on a farm owned by Albert Kincaid five miles northeast of Athens. Bessie's grandmother, Martha Helm Raikes, lived with Bessie, Will, and their three children near Indian Point, Menard County, Illinois, in 1920, and continued to do so until 1923. Will and Bessie lived in several homes in Athens, but resided on South Adams Street from 1945 until their deaths.

Bessie died on December 13, 1972, a year after her husband, and is buried in Hall Cemetery in Athens, Illinois.
