Emery Chris “Parrot” Jensen (1904-2005) was born on April
19, 1904, in Furnas County, Nebraska, to Charles Oscar and Nell Babcock Jensen.
Charles Oscar was the son of Aanon “Onen” Jensen, the only Civil War veteran
still living in Menard or Mason Counties when he died in 1941. Emery moved to
Athens, Menard County, Illinois, with his widowed mother and siblings in 1925.
Emery and his brothers, Leslie and Charles "Chap", built and operated a Ford
dealership and Texaco service station from 1932-1969 in Athens. Chap became a
mail carrier in 1948, leaving his brothers to operate the garage. Emery married
Dorothy Wilcoxon, and had two sons: Norman and Robert.
Emery died at the age of 101 on April 20, 2005, at Sunny Acres Nursing Home near
Petersburg where he had been a resident for several years. Although his eyesight
had faded, his mind remained clear and enabled him to entertain family and other
visitors with stories from his long and interesting life. His ashes are interred
in the Indian Point Cemetery in Menard County, Illinois.
