John Overstreet, Sr.

John Overstreet, Sr. (1760-1848) was born January 16, 1760, in Bedford County, Virginia, to Thomas and Agnes Overstreet. John enlisted in the Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War when he was just fifteen. He was in the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth, and Stony Point. John was at Valley Forge, and he volunteered for the siege of Yorktown until Cornwallis's surrender.

He married Nancy Jane Dabney on November 2, 1786 in Bedford County. Their six children – Abner, Esther, John, Dabney, Jane “Jenny”, and Nancy Martha - were all born in Virginia. John moved to Cabell County, Virginia (now in West Virginia) and then came with his son Elisha and family to the Athens vicinity in 1827. He lived with his son Dabney during his final years. John Overstreet died on July 08, 1848, and is buried in West Cemetery in Athens.
