John Ebersolt came to this country from Alsace Loraine when he was fifteen years of age and worked for Robert Bone, earning sufficient money to repay his cousin who had furnished the means for his passage to America. While at Mr. Bone's he learned to speak the English language.

At the breaking out of the Civil War, although not yet a citizen of the United States, he volunteered for service and was severely wounded in the battle of Stone River, suffering all his life from the effects of the wounds received there.

Later in life he was united in marriage with Margaret Van Doren, daughter of Peter and Margaret Van Doren of Sangamon County. Mrs. Ebersolt was reared in a pious home and has imparted her religious training to their family, which consists of three children: Peter, Margaret and Nellie.

Industry and frugality have ever been characteristics of Mr. Ebersolt, enabling him to acquire a good farm.
