It's not uncommon to find an ancestor buried in a neighboring county. This
will be the case for anyone searching for Sarah Ann FISK, who died at the age
of 80y 23d, a housewife who was born in Columbia Co., PA and died on 13 Aug
1904 in Petersburg, IL Menard County but is buried outside of the county line in
Sangamon County. So too is the story of Leslie Oliver GRANT who died near
Athens, IL in Menard County at the age of 10y 6m 2d on 21 Oct 1888. Both of
these people were buried in Canterbury Cemetery which is just outside of Cantrall,
Illinois in Sangamon County.

On Sunday afternoon (24 Aug 2003) Stan & Jeanie Lowe with Brianna Boggs &
Emily Abbott experienced the pleasant surprise of finding that Canterbury
Cemetery in Sangamon County had been cleaned up. This cemetery had been overgrown and
unkept for a long time. Thankfully, someone had spent a great deal of time
cutting the grass, weeds and small trees and, more importantly, reset several
stones - including some large ones which had probably been buried for several
decades. Broken stones were carefully laid together piece by piece and others
were reset to their proud standing position. Our hats are off to whomever
cleaned and restored this cemetery. They have done an excellent job.
More than 40 stones were found but not all were readable. Photos were taken
and are now online on the MAGA site at
Almost every surname in this cemetery will be familiar to Menard County
researchers and may prove beneficial.
