Mrs. Katie L. Bailey was born at Delhi, Illinois, April 25, 1855, the daughter of Frederick and Susana Sunderland and died at the family residence in this city at 2:30, Sunday morning, January 8, 1933 at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 13 days, after a short illness of pneumonia.

Mrs. Bailey has made Athens her home for the greater period of her life. She was known to her friends and neighbors as a woman of generosity and ambition. Although the last few years she was physically unfit, she never gave up until the serious illness of a few days struck her.

Mrs. Bailey was the mother of four children, one daughter, Mrs. Michael Conboy preceded her in death in the year 1901.

She is survived by one daughter Mrs. Lola Messersmith, two sons, Charles and Frank Howard, all of Athens; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Chappel, Mrs. Pauline Clark, and Mrs. Emma Perrings; two brothers, Daniel and Pete Sunderland. At the time of her funeral she had one brother and a sister who were critically ill and unable to attend her funeral.

Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church in this city at 2:00 Tuesday afternoon, Rev. J. C. Ewing of Pleasant Plains, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. L. O. Unger, officiating. Interment was made in Hall cemetery.
