PEORIA - Herbert J. Schonewise, 91, of 3417 N. Sterling Ave. died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, at Manor Care Health Services.

Born March 29, 1910, in Oakford to Fred and Nannie Nelson Schonewise, he married Helena Treseler on March 29, 1936, in Peoria. She died Oct. 1, 1986, in Peoria. He married Pauline Hendrickson on Nov. 20, 1988, in Las Vegas. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Roger of Mount Prospect; one daughter, Susan (and Roger) Leighty of Peoria; one stepson, Lyle Hendrickson of Bloomington; one stepdaughter, Madalyn (and Marshall) Yeast of Cameron; one brother, Fred of Springfield; two sisters, Sophia (and Henry) Deverman and Elsie Lockhart, both of Springfield; three granddaughters; five stepgranddaughters; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

He attended Peoria Barber College.

He was a barber and owned Herb's Barber Shop in Peoria for 55 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria.

He also was a member of Illinois Masonic Lodge 263, AF&AM, for more than 50 years. He also was a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria; Mohammed Temple, Shrine, and its Greeters Unit; Elks Lodge 20; and WABCO Retirees Club.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wilton Mortuary, where visitation will be 1 1/2 hours before. The Rev. Clay Macaulay will officiate. Entombment will be in American Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, his church or Methodist Hospice.
