Mrs. John M. Smoot Passes Away
Mrs. Minnie Brooks Smoot, 78, wife of Attorney John M. Smoot, Petersburg died at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 1938 at St. John's hospital, following an illness of three weeks.
Mrs. Smoot was one of the most prominent women of Menard County. She was a member of the Christian Church and active in the affairs of that congregation. She was also a leader in civic and club circles of Petersburg and the county.
She was a daughter of the late Mr. And Mrs. Presley Thornton Brooks, born in Stanford, McLean County.
Besides her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Edward DuQuoin of Kansas City, Missouri; and one son, Harold of Petersburg; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from the First Christian Church of Petersburg, at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, Rev. L. R. Cronkhite, assisted by Rev. Wm. Groves of Springfield officiating. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
