Mrs. John Gerhard Zurstadt, a resident of Menard county for many years died Monday afternoon, April 19 at Springfield Hospital in Springfield at the age of eighty-six years, three months and seventeen days. She had bee ill only a few days and was taken to the hospital Sunday morning in the hop that an operation might improve her condition.

Mrs. Zurstadt, whose name before her marriage was Peters, was born January 2, 1840 in Germany, where she spent her early life. She was baptized and confirmed in her motherland, before coming to America. She came here in 1865 and spent the remainder of her life in and near Petersburg.

She was married in April 1875 to John Gerhard Zurstadt. To this union were born six children, one of whom died in infancy. Those surviving are Mrs. Julius Hackman of Athens, Mrs. John Rainey of Petersburg, and Frank, Elizabeth and Katherine, at home. She is also survived by five grandchildren, one brother, Frank Peters, of Minonk, a number of nieces and nephews and a great many friends. Mr. Zurstadt passed away in 1906.

Mrs. Zurstadt was always hale and hearty and her sudden illness, followed by the operation and her sudden death, came as a great shock to her many friends.

The remains were brought to the family residence east of this city and short funeral services were held there Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. Frederick Schuathorst and Rev. G. Hildebrand, followed at 2:30 by services at St. Pauls church in this city, and the remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery.
