Now Let's Explore Mercer County!

Mercer County is named after Hugh Mercer, a physician and general who died from his wounds during the Revolutionary War.He was wounded at the Battle of Princeton.

Mercer was part of the land that Congress had set aside in 1812 as payment to volunteer soldiers for their service in the War of 1812.

Mercer County was founded in 1825 and was formed from unorganized territory near Pike County.

Counties surrounding Mercer are:

Rock Island

Henry

Knox

Henderson

Warren

DeMoines County, Iowa

Louisa County, Iowa

Michelle Ross has generously volunteered to look up obituaries for various counties in Illinois.

Living History, Memorial Day Weekend, at The District Theatre!

In early May of 1864 President Abraham Lincoln was disappointed that the House of Representatives would harshly punish the South, in the event the North was to win America ’s Civil War. Grant was about to seize the reins of the Army of the Potomac in a long-awaited move against Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia.

In celebration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial and Memorial Day weekend The District Theatre of Rock Island proudly presents the return of the two Civil War giants on the same stage in Chronicles of Lincoln & Grant!  The two-person historical show, depicting Lincoln’s and Grant’s rise to Civil War fame, will be performed on Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25.  Curtain is at 8:00 p.m.

This production features local professional actors Tom Swenson and Dan Haughey who also co-wrote and co-produced the program. The Cedar Rapids Public Library has called Swenson’s portrayal of Lincoln , “Very informative and entertaining.”  Charles Bracelen Flood, author of the book Grant and Sherman and the award-winning Lee: The Last Years, says of Mr. Haughey’s performance, “This is fine theatre: this is Grant as he really was."

Chronicles of Lincoln & Grantis a family-friendly show, suitable for ages 13 and up.  Educators and librarians can receive a three-dollar discount on their tickets while they last.  Tickets are $15 each for the general public.  A short question and answer period on Lincoln and Grant, conducted by the actors, will follow each performance. For tickets, contact The District Theatre at 309-235-1654, located at 1611— 2nd Avenue , Rock Island , Illinois .  For more on Chronicles of Lincoln & Grant, go to or sites.google.com/site/LincolnGrantQCUSA/home.  Or contact Dan Haughey at www.danact3.com .
