BANK ROBBERIES
The first bank hold-up in the county was March 24th, 1856, when John Thorington, teller for Cook, Sargent & Parker, of Rock Island, was assaulted by three men, at the noon hour, who got away with about $5,000.00.
There have been two bank hold-ups at Silvis, the last being in 1912, when J. Lee Crowder was furiously assaulted by three men and died as a result of the injuries. Two men are now in the county jail awaiting trial for tilts offense. There is nothing more significant of the growth of the banking business than the elegant offices now occupied by the banks of Rock Island, Moline and East Moline, most of which has been accomplished within the last three years, and burglary protection has received even more care and attention than luxurious quarters.
