THE DAVENPORT, ROCK ISLAND & NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD
The Davenport, Rock Island & Northwestern Railroad was built in 1899, between East Moline.Ill ., and Clinton, la., crossing the Mississippi river on the Crescent bridge, which the road built and owns. This road handles the business of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy and the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroads between these points.
The stations on this line in Iowa are: Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley, LeClaire, Princeton, Shaffton and Comanche. The line operates no trains of its own, either passenger or freight, and its length is forty-five miles. The main offices are at Davenport. la., the general manager being O. B. Grant. Oue of the most important measures carried through to successful completion was the erection and subsequent management of the railroad bridge across the main channel, constructed by the United States Government and the Chicago, Rock Island &. Pacific Railroad Company.
Without the railroads, the cities of Rock Island and Moline, with their contiguous territory, would have never been developed to their present proportions from the river towns the railroads found them. They would have remained but landing places for river steamers. With the opening up of these great highways of transcontinental travel, Rock Island and Moline liave become very important factors in the commerce of the whole country.
Through them courses the never-ceasing stream of traffic, not only east and west, but north and south. With the coming of the railroads, came outside capital, commanded by men of broad outlook and keen appreciation of the opportunities here offered, and the results of their business insight are to be found on every side in the stupendous undertakings which have made Rock Island county people and products known the world over.
