MILAN MOURNS MRS. DICKSON, OLD RESIDENT
Church Filled for Final Rites for
Community Pioneer, 93;
III Only Few Hours
Residents of the community this week are mourning the loss of Mrs.Edith Dickson, 93, Milan 's oldest resident, whose death early Friday morning, came as a shock to all who knew and loved her.
The Milan Presbyterian church was filled to capacity Monday afternoon by the many friends and relatives who gathered to pay final respects to the memory of the tiny woman, whose sweetness and wonderful dispositionendeared her to all.
: Rev. Ralph E. Lemon, pastor of the Church of which she had been a member for more than 60 years, officiated at the funeral service and Carolyn Ann Cutler of Milan , sang "Beautiful Isle Of Somewhere" and "Abide With Me", accompanied by Mrs Hosea McMaster, at the organ. Henry S. Dibhern, George McConnell and Hosea McMas ters served as ushers and pallbearers were Ralph W. Palmer, Frank Will hite. t William O'Neal and Andrew , Misch, all of Milan ; Joseph Criswell of Rock Island and Frank E. Crompton ; of near Illinois City . Burial was in the family lot at Chippiannock cemetery in Rock Island . Assisting with the flow ers were Barbara Wright. Elinor H ahn. Doris Enger, Georgia andAlice McMasters. Private (rites for the family were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Larson funeral home. Mrs Dickson. who was familiarlyknown as "Grandma" or "Aunt Edie"had been in ailing health for the last couple of years, but at no time had She been bedfast. Thursday, when she wasn’tfeeling as well as usual, she and her granddaughter, Mrs Herman Sims of Milan, walked from her home to the Milan General hospital for a check-up When the attending physician was unable to get blood from her, for a bloodcount, she was put to bed and given two transfusions She suffered a severe coughing attack at ll:30 and another at 12:30, the last one from which she failed to rally, members of the family said. She remained conscious until her death. She entered the hospital at 4:10 p.m. Thursday and death occurred at 12:36 a.m. Friday, less than nine hours later
Edith Webb Gotobed was born Oct. 22,1855 in Cleveland , Ohio , a daughter ot Joseph and Betsy Barnes Gotobed. When she was 10 years old, the family moved to Bowling township where her father operated one ot tne first big fruit farms in Rock island county.;She was educated in Bowling township schools and attended a girl's boarding school in Rock Island .
She married Charles H. Brandenburg Nov. 2, 1880 in Bowling. He died Nov. 2, 1903 . Later, on Nov. 21, 1905 , she married William Dickson in Milan . He also preceded her in death, May 15, 1937 .
Mrs Dickson who was a member of the Milan Presbyterian church for more than 60 years was an active church worker throughout h«r life. She was a member of the Ladies Aid society and the Mary Martha Mission ary group of the church. She was also a charter member of Milan Chapter, No. 326, Order of the Eastern Star. Members of the chapter attended her ; funeral in a body.
She is survived by two sons, Charles A. (Chick) Brandenburg, Rock Island county deputy sheriff, with whom she resided, and William D. Brandenburg, both of Milan; three granddaughters, Mrs Robert Connolly, Mrs Herman Simms and Mrs Joseph Norton all of Milan; six great-grandchildren Mrs Phyllis Pegg, Robert Connolly, .Donna Connolly and Barbara Sims, all of Milan and Charles and Donald Brandenburg, of Rock Island'; two great-great grandsons, Bruce and Gary Pegg of Milan and a brother, Joseph Gotobed of Turlock, Calif.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Samuel, George and William 'Gotobed; a sister and a grandson Charles J. Brandenburg
