November 22,

Elwood Griffith

Elwood Griffith died suddenly, Sunday evening, Nov 22, at 10:45 o’clock at his home in

Rural township from a paralytic stroke. He was born June 5, 1839 near West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

He enlisted in Co. “C” 97 th Penn., volunteer Infantry in Sept. 1861, and served his beloved country three years in the Civil War. He also was in the employ of the Government for three years as a Government store-keeper at Fortress Monroe, Va. And also was emploed at Fort Armstrong in 1868 and on March 31, 1869 he was united in Marriage to Miss Carrie A. Baulch of Fortress Monroe, Va.,of New York City.

They moved to their home in Rural Township on Nov. 4, 1870 where they have lived ever since, and he had proven himself a good neighbor and was loved by all who knew him. For a number of years it had been the custom of his neighbors to meet at his home on his birthday bringing lunch and baskets and spend the day with him and his good wife but failing health made it too much for him and wife to entertain on that day, but his friends still remembered him by post cards and a word of cheer.

The best eulogy I can give him, was that he was loved by all and was a great friend of the children who called him Grandpa Griffith. He is survived by his wife, a sister, who resides in Pennsylvania and three grandchildren, Celesta and Blanche Wilson of Bowling and Ciara Griffith Coyne of Rural township.

The funeral was from the late home Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock Rev. Dixon officiating and burial took place at Chippiannock.

The floral tributes were many and beautiful, among them was a beautiful floral flag.
