WAR: Civil War. Co. D. 12th Regt. III. Inf. Enrolled under the name of Phillipp Schlemmer at Springfield, III on 25 Feb 1864 as a Private in Co. D. Ill Inf. and was discharged on the 18 Sept. 1865. He died at Nora Springs, Iowa on the 13th August 1875 of consumption due to exposure. He was born in March 1843 in Germany. 6 ft. Dark complexion. Brown eyes. Brown hair. His occupation was a cooper and Painter. He married Julia Hunold at Rock Island, Illinois on the 7th July 1864. From Declaration of a Widow for Original Pension. MARRIAGE: State of Illinois, Rock Island County, July 7th 1869. I, Elton C. Cropper, a Police Magistrate hereby certify that on this day I joined in Marriage Mr. Philip Schlemmer with Miss Julia Hunold agreeably to law. Civil War Div. W.O. 841001 Julia Ewing Phillip Schlemmer D 12 III Inf.
WAR: Statement by Julia Ewing, Claimant, 1539 Hague Ave, St Paul, Minn. July 6, 1920. That said Phillip Schlemmer died of tuberculosis caused by exposure during his service in the Army as aforesaid in August, 1875, leaving as his survivors this applicant and four small girls. That applicant married Alexander F. Ewing on February 13, 1879, and that said Alexander F. Ewing died in August, 1905. That there was no issue of said second marriage. That applicant was from August, 1875 until February 13, 1879, solely dependent on her own earnings for the support of herself and minor children. That since the death of Alexander F. Ewing in August, 1905, applicant has been dependent upon her two daughters for her support. That applicant applied for pension about fourteen years ago, but application was refused on account of subsequent marriage to Alexander F. Ewing. That your petitioner is not now a pensioner and does not remember the number of her original petition for a pension.WAR: State of Illinois, County of Rock Island: Mrs. Jane Schlemmer, beingfirst duly sworn deposes and says; that she was a sister-in-law of and well acquainted with, Phillip Schlemmer, who was married to the applicant in this petition; that the said Phillip Schlemmer died in the City of Nora Springs, Iowa on or about the 21st day of August, 1875, while a resident of said city; that the petitioner Julia (Schlemmer) Ewing, was the wife and living with said Phillip Schlemmer at the time of his death on the above stated date. 24 Nov. 1920.

Enlisted in Volunteer Army of U.S. Co D., 12th Regt. Ill Inf. 25 Feb 1864 and continued to serve until 10 July 1865. Honorably discharged. Renounces forever all allegiance to Ferninand Landgrave of Hesse Homberg. Naturalized 22 July 1865. Witnesses: John N. Schlemmer and Peter Schlemmer. Page 16.
