In former days the Captain was engaged in steamboating on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers; has family, ten children, five sons and live daughters; wife was Miss Louisiana Green, born in Adams Co., Ohio, Oct. 15,1819; married May 18, 1841, in Cincinnati; was Assessor four years; held other offices.

HEAGY SAMUEL Merchant; Hampton; was born in Taney Town, Carroll Co., Md., on the 20th of April, 1838; left Ms native town in 1854, and went to Baltimore and hired out as clerk in a wholesale Notion House; remained there three years, then came to Hampton, in August, 1857, and went in Francis Black's store as clerk, where he remained until April, 1861, then started in business for himself, which he followed until Dec., 1868, when Mr. A. R. Stoddard went into partnership, under the firm name of Heagy & Stoddard, and the firm has since been doing an extensive business; in the spring of 1871, the Messrs. Heagy & Stoddard commenced prospecting for coal, and opened the first mine north of Rock Island, and their business increased so rapidly, that they were obliged to form a Stock Company, which now goes under the name of the Hampton Coal Mining Co., Messrs. H. &. S. controlling the mine, and having the larger share of the stock; they commenced taking out a few hundred bushels per day, and now have four shafts in operation, and get out from thirty to forty cars per day, and are the most extensive coal producers in Rock Island Co.; they employ from 200 to 800 men; there is a thriving little village in the vicinity of these mines, called Happy Hollow, there being a post office, telegraph office, and station; Mr. Heagy married Miss Henrietta, daughter of J.Birchard, of Scott Co., Iowa, April 20,1863; she was.born July 19,1838; they have one son, Samuel M., who was born March 8,1866.
