HENRY EFFLANDT
was born in Holstein , Germany , May 15, 1855 , and is a son of Christian and Katherine (Plainbeck) Efflandt. His father, who was a veterinary surgeon, died when our subject was only seven years of age. The latter remained at home until seventeen, during which time he secured a fair common school education. He then started for America in 1872, and soon after landing in New York continued his journey across the country to Moline , where lived his married sister; Mrs. Kathrina Schacht.
In this city he secured employment and during the first two years managed to save up a small capital. He had but twelve dollars and seventy cents on his arrival. In 1874 he commenced working in a meat market, working for others until 1878, when he began operations on his own account. He conducted a shop at. Sixth avenue and Nineteenth street until 1883, and then removed to No. 1618 Fifteenth street, where he carried on business ior ten years, after which he sold out and purchased his present property at No. 165 Fourth avenue
. He here owns a good store building that it is fitted up with all the accessories for carrying on a first-class market, and he enjoys there a good business. His trade has steadily increased, and his well directed efforts have resulted in bringing to him an excellent income.
Mr. Efflandt was married in Moline November 18, 18/7, to Johanna Wind, who was born in Schlesswig , Germany , a daughter of Lawrence and Tina (Jenson) Wind. They now have eight children William, who was born in Moline May 20, 1878, is a graduate of the Augustana Business College of the class of 1897; Helen, born October 23, 1884; Clara, born October 2, 1886; Julius, born October 15, 1888; George, born December 21, 1890; Otto, born December 20, 1892; Stella, born December I 8. 1894, and Herbert, born February 14, 1887 , are all at home.
Mr. Efflandt is independent in politics, voting for the man whom he thinks best litted for the office. He supported Garfield in 1880, Cleveland in 1884, and Bryan in 1896. He is a prominent and popular member of the Turners' Society, in which he has served as trustee and treasurer
