The Independent was published once a week so in some instances the deaths and funerals had already occured.

 

 

November 22, 1854-Rock Island Republic

Charles Hopkins Spencer died Saturday last, He was born in this city on 18 November 1836 and was nearly 18 yrs. old. He attended school at Mt. Morris from the fall of 1852 to the spring of 1854 since which time he had been a dstudent at Iowa College of Davenport. His funeral was this forenoon at his father's home and he was buried near the home where rests the dust of his little brother who went before him.

October 31, 1855

George Harris Jr. son of Mr. George W. Harris one of the early settlers of this place accidently shot himself last Thursday near Andalusia. George was about 21 years old. His funeral will be Sunday.

November 3, 1864

Mrs. Catherine Routzong died, age 56. The funeral will be Nov. 5, at the Methodist Church in Camden(Milan).

December 6, 1864

Nannie, youngest child of Holmes and Almeda Hakes, died Dec. 3 aged 2 yrs. 4 mos.

March 14, 1866

Albert B. Warren died on the 7th inst. at his home near Warrens Creek below Camden. He was an old pioneer. The funeral was 10 March.

September 24, 1842

Died on Sunday morning, the 13th, Mrs. Nancy Consort of Rock Island, age 63

July 4, 1845

Col. George Davenport was murdered on the island of Rock Island.

July 9, 1845

James S. Spencer died.

October 23, 1845

Died on Sundy,the 19th inst. Phiny Augustus, son of P.H. and Catherine Olgilvie, age 2 years and 2 months.

March 11, 1848

Died at the home of Wm. L. Lee, her son-in-law in Rock Island on Friday, the 3rd inst. Mrs. Sarah C. Sears, 65 years old.

March 6, 1848

Died at the residence of her brother near Rock Island on Saturday last, Leah Brasher, 56 years.

March 21, 1849

Died at this place on Friday 17th inst. Mrs. Sarah Jane, wife of Danie Crist, age 35 years.

August 16, 1854

The 14 year old son of Wm. Bruner drowned while bathing just below the dam at Camden Mills on Saturday.

September 6, 1854

Died this morning of Typhoid fever, Clarissa, wife of W.E. Cropper, aged 25 years, 3 months, 10 days.

June 27, 1866

A young man named Wilson, 16, was killed by lightening on Larsons Prairie near Andalusia last Thursday while plowing.

 

November 15, 1854

The body of Charles Spencer, 17 year old son of Hon. John H. Spencer was found in the Rock River between Carr's Island and Van Druff's Island.

November 25, 1869

William Dickson, a native of New York has died. He was the founder of Milan.

Feb. 10, 1894

James Tay, resident of Milan since 1841, died at 4:30 yesterday a.m. Tay was born in Milford, Ireland on August 31, 1817, consequently was almost 77 years old. William Mc Connell was his nephew.

June 19, 1902

Anders Peterson died at his home on Big Island. He was born in 1832 in Denmark. He came to this country in 1862 and to Illinois in 1879. Survivors:

Mrs. Moses Tuttle, 74, died last week. the former Ellen I. Graves was born in New Hampshire July 25, 1828. She came with her parents to Rock Island in 1847. In 1849 she was married to Mr. Tuttle and resided most of her life in Bowling Township. She was the mother of four daughters, Mrs. Emma Bailey(whose death occured about twelve years ago) Mrs. Elsie Hingstrom of rock Island, Mrs. Minnie Wochner of Bowling Township, Mrs. Nettie Coulter of Taylor Ridge and one adopted daughter Francis at home. Services were held at McConnell Chapel where interment was made.

 

August 28, 1902

A 10 month baby of Mr. and Mrs. Shrader died Sunday and was buried Monday, from the Presbyterian Church.

 

September 4, 1902

John G. Hinderer died Monday while on a fishing trip in the river. He was born in Germany in 1839 and came to Milan in 1871. He is survived by his wife Barbara and by 3 children-George, Bertha and Mildred all living at home. The funeral was Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island.

September 25, 1902

Miss Francis Crowell died Sept. 19th at her home on Dickson street in Milan, aged 49 years, 1 month and 3 days. Wm. H. Brown is her step-father. The funeral was Sunday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. she was a member of the M.E. Church. William Brown is her half-brother. Della Remsburg of Ohio, Bureau County is her cousin. Mr. and Mrs. H.P. Brown of rock Island attended the funeral as did Mrs. Lyle and Mrs. J.A. Bruch of Tipton,Iowa.

October 23, 1902

Joseph Fitzpatrick, an old resident of Milan, died Thursday at his home in Milan; the funeral will be Sunday. He was born in Rural township 55 years ago and spent his early life on a farm. After he married, he sold his farm and moved to Milan where he was in the milling business. Burial will be in the Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.

October 30, 1902

Leona Rhea, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wilson, died Tuesday. she was born 21 March 1899; she is survived by her parents, 6 brothers and 1 sister. the funeral was Thursday at the M.E. Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island . Noda Wilson who has been working in Howard Kansas is the brother of the dec'd.

November 20, 1902

Mrs. Julius Crist died Tuesday at her home on Van Druffs Island; she leaves 5 children, the youngest 3 months.

December 11, 1902

John Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Saulpaugh, died Wednesday. He was born 8 June 1902. Burial was in the Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.

April 2, 1903

Issac N. Ailes died Wednesday at his home opposite the toll gate, aged 81 years. The funeral was today with burial in the Dickson Cemetery.

May 21, 1903

Phillip F. Cropper died May 20th aged 22 years. He was born 8 April 1881 and is survived by 2 brothers, William and Arthur Cropper and by a sister Julia. The funeral was today at the M.E. Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island.

July 2, 1903

Louis Johnson died Wednesday at his home in Milan. He was born in Sweden in 1856 and came to this country as a young man. for a number of years he worked for Rock Island Plow Works. He later moved to Milan and opened a fish market. the funeral was Thursday with burial in the Dickson Cemetery.

July 23, 1903

Miss Mary Mathews died Thursday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Mathews. she is survived by her parents, one sister and two borhters. The funeral was Saturday with burial in the chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.

Louisa, widow of the late Jacob Vandruff who died on Big Island several years ago, died Saturday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Jame L. Wynes in South Rock Island. She was one of the early settlers of this county. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eberhart and came from New York when a child., with her parents. She married Jacob Vandruff in 1849 and they lived on Big Island where a family of 10 was born to them. All of the children survive. the funeral was Monday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island.

December 3, 1903

Charles H. Brandenburg died here Thursday. He was born 25 September 1851 in Muscatine, Iowa and came to this county in 1854 to be a painter. He married Edith Gotobed in 1880. She survives as do 2 sons: Charles Jr. and William D. Brandenburg; his aged mother, Mrs. A. Gitt and by 3 half-brothers; J.W. Gitt of Sears, Wm. O. Gitt of South Rock Island; by 2 half-sisters; Mrs. Jennie DeVoe of South Rock Island and Mrs. Cora Ellis of Bowling. The funeral was Saturday at the Presbyterian Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island.

1 Oct. 1903

Ella May Goben died Saturday aged 18 years, 2 months 18 days. She was born at Carbon Cliff, Illinois and was a member of the Milan M.E. Church . She is survived by her parents, 3 sisters and 5 brothers. The funeral was Monday at the Milan M.E. Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery .

Margaret, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pryce, died Monday aged 3 months, 2 weeks. The funeral was Wednesday with burial in the Coal Valley Cemetery .

Oct. 29,1903

Carl Raymond, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hansen of Big Island , was born on October 14, 1903 and died October 22nd, 1903 . The funeral was Friday with burial in Moline 's Riverside Cemetery .

Dec. 3,1903

Mrs. D.R. South died Monday in Milan . She was born Maria Bridgeford in Butler Co., Ohio on 12 May 1841 and was thus aged 62 years, 6 months, 18 days. She married D.R. South on 6 March 1862 and they had 5 children: Olves and Delaska South, at home; Mainly who died at the age of 18 years; Mrs. William Nice of Milan and Brownwell of Rock island . She is also survived by her husband and 2 sisters - Mrs. Joseph Tindall and Mrs. Louisa Tindall of Sherrard; and by 2 brothers: Albert and Henry Bridpeford of Denver , Colorado ; and by 4 grandchildren. The funeral was at the Milan Presbyterian Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .
