THE MISSISSIPPI

Dere's an ol' man called de Mississippi,
Dat's de ol' man dat I'd like to be,
What does he care if de world's got troubles?
What does he care if de land ain't free?

Ol' Man River,
Dat Ol' Man River,
He mus' know sumpin',
But don' say nothin';
He jes' keeps rollin',
He keeps on rollin' along.
                                   Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein

The Mississippi River is a big part of Rock Island county. Whether it's barge traffic, boating, fishing or sitting in a traffic jam on the I-74 Bettendorf Bridge! It can be a friend at the end of the day when you're sitting and watching it flowing by or watching a barge traveling down stream. It can also be a formidable enemy when fighting the spring floods that sometime come to the Quad Cities.

Many settlers came here because of the river and what it had to offer. Many people have lost their lives to 'Old Man River".It's played a big part in the history of Rock Island. Moline and all the communties it travels along. There is the slogan QCA, joined by a river and that still hold true
