MRS. HARVEY VAN ORDER

 

Mrs. Harvey Van Order was born in Essex county, N. Y., as was her husband. The latter was a Methodist minister and belonged to a conference in New York state, and was transferred to the Michigan Conference in 1847.

In the fall of 1849, he moved with his family in a covered wagon from Michigan to Cordova, Ill. There were five children in the family: Flora, who is now Mrs. H. C. Trent of Port Byron, Ill.; who is of Chicago; Cyras who is deceased; Arimathea who is deceased; and Mary who is Mrs. John Marshall of Edgar, Neb. Mr. Van Order taught school in Cordova during the winter of 1849-50. In 1854 he moved to Henry count}Il1., and there he organized the first Sunday school in Osco township.

Mr. Van Order was a pioneer preacher in both Rock Island and Henry counties and his wife ably assisted him in all of his good work.
