PIONEER WOMEN

By Mrs. George H. Huntoon

Rock Island county has had its full quota of noble, self-sacrificing women who have left their impress upon its history.

The brief nature of this article has made it impossible to do more than touch upon a few of the pioneer women whose names will always be connected with the history of Rock Island county. There are thousands of others, women good and true, devoted to home and family, who spent their lives in willing service for those whom they loved.

These noble women sacrificed their health and lives to advance their communities just as truly as the soldier on the battlefield. They often perished from hard work, scanty comforts and countless privations, and their memory must be held in reverent admiration. No woman could pass through the hardships incident to frontier life at the period when Rock Island county was being opened, without losing something vital.

The burdens of life fell heaviest upon her, and she made the least complaint. While her men blazed their way through the wilderness, she kept up the home and bore and reared the children, and hers were the most difficult tasks.

A partial list of these women is herewith given: Mrs. Moses Baily, Mrs. Charles B. Menhall, Mrs. Benjamin Moore, Mrs. Henry Snyder, Mrs. Warren Wilcox, Mrs. Albert S.
